Was Not Signing RJ Umberger A Mistake?

What do you guys think? He seems to have a good career going and solidified himself as a solid NHL foward. Was it a mistake to let him walk for that 2nd rounder we got? I think enough time has passed to make a fair judgement on this. I remember hearing his attitude was bad and thats why he wasn't signed yet it has not seemed to hurt him so far in his career.

How would a Dubi/Umberger/Callahan line look now?

this implies that umberger wanted to sign here, which he didn't

I've heard that, but I've also heard that we weren't totally sincere in our interest, and never even made an actual offer.

I know there were rumours floating around at the time that the rangers' plan was to get the comp pick and then try to sign him, but I have no idea how true that might have been.

If the main reason was $$ (wasn't he asking for the rookie max?) and the Rangers didn't want to give it too him, in hindsight you have to say yes, they made a mistake.

Sure you shouldn't bend over to rookies who haven't done squat, but with the amount of money this org has wasted on bit-players, maybe overpaying a bit at the start to keep RJ would have got us on the right track sooner

The rangers acquired him just to get a compensation pick. He openly said once that he was irritated that they did not even try to sign him.

It was definitely a mistake.

We used the competition pick we got for him to.move up in the first round to draft Korpikoski.

just think about how that worked out!

This was a disaster and a very big mistake imo. Lets just chalk it up to remnants of the old guard not evaluating young talent in the system.

RJ is a good player and i'm not losing sleep over this, but an organization like this one that struggles to draft top 6 let alone top 3 talent, can't afford to make any more mistakes like this.

RJ would be a great player for our current system...

As I recall, the company line was his attitude rubbed some people the wrong way.

On list of mistakes this regime has made, not signing RJ Umberger is pretty far down on there.

I suppose it could be viewed as a mistake given that the organization dealt away Korpikoski (which is frankly looking like it may be shaping up to be a bigger mistake), but that would be making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Umberger would be a good 2nd line center on most teams in the league, but frankly, I'd take Stepan or Anisimov over him pretty easily.

The Rangers org at the time wasn't a fan of his attitude IIRC. He sat out 03-04 (justifiably) due to contentious contract negotiations with Burke. Aren't Burke and Sather good friends? Either way, the Rangers never really made an effort to sign him for the 1.13m he got...

I believe RJ was looking for rookie max, and was coming off missing an entire season because he refused to play for the vancouver organization.

I can't blame the Rangers for balking at that....

Yes, we lost a valuable asset. Surely Sather took advisement from his Director of Player Personnel and Assistant GM of the time. I for one am quite glad Renney and Maloney aren't in on making these kind of decisions any longer, their ability to Judge talent, especially the Head Scout's, was terrible.

One would question that the mere decision to acquire the player was a poor one and the advisement there was poor.

He missed that whole season because Vancouver wouldnt offer him that contract either. His contemporaries all got that contract, but Burke refused to budge

Eh, it basically became Rucinsky for a second. No big deal.

the rumor was he was a wild kid with a bad outlook for the game. He didn't practice hard and wanted to float and was labeled with a bad attitude

I feel like this thread pops up every few months....along with drafting Hugh Jessiman, drafting Al Montoya, blah blah blah....mistakes happen, it's not perfect science, don't really see why people need to keep beating a dead horse IMO

I mean, maybe. Not really that big of a deal. I'm happy with where we are at. If we signed him who knows if we still have Stepan, Anisimov and/or Richards

Yeah, that's the way I remember it as well. The Rangers seem to value character highly so even if he signed I don't think we would've retained him to be honest.

It was a mistake in the sense that we lost what turned out to be a pretty good asset for nothing (unless we got a comp pick, then I would be interested in seeing who we used that pick on).

But in the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't mean anything. As mentioned before, Stepan and Anisimov are better fits here.
