That's a very interesting idea, Crede.

Any guesses on a jersey number for Vinny? 22 maybe?

Hey, that'd be fun to have an HFer sing the anthem in Columbus. Good luck with the audition!

Fun fact: Leo himself posts here on occasion.

He's not exactly hiding his identity, he posts as LeoWelsh!

As I've stated before, I'm not a fan of the anthem being performed before every sporting event; but, if it must be done at the Arena, I like Leo's straightforward and respectful version better than almost any other. And I agree that the natural development of shouting his name is exactly the kind of thing we want to see grow in Columbus as a local hockey tradition. Anyone else who sings it should be preparded, in advance, for it. It's not a sign of disrespect for them, just a part of what makes our hockey experience unique.

However, as I previously stated, winners are either built through decades of work (Bruins/Detroit) or very high draft picks (Hawks/Pittsburgh). It isn't like the Jackets franchise loses less money for finishing 8th to last as opposed to dead last.

If I had it my way, the NHL entry draft would have a short 'memory' so that teams would also be weighted, in addition to how their regular season went, with how their seasons in the past few years went too.
That's an interesting idea, one that would have changed the dynamics of numerous recent drafts. Whether or not it's a good idea is debatable, however I would be all for giving it a shot ... we aren't the only team that has struggled with futility and not gotten higher picks ... Florida is the first team I think of when I think of this happening; they have been terrible for as long as we have, and currently they have no signs of looking up. A system like this would be a huge benefit to a team like that.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on the part that Florida has no signs of looking up. The salary cap floor forced them to make huge improvements, they have almost an entirely new team now.

My guess is 13 after that, 45. These are the other two numbers that Prospal has used (Phantoms and Senators (13) Flyers (first stint) (45)

I absolutely and completely agree with all of this in every particular. The anthem shouldn't have to be dressed up - it's the freaking national anthem.

(well, okay, I have issue with the part in that post where "prepared" is misspelled. But other than that, it's all good. )

Think of it as an intentional flaw on my post so the gods do not become jealous. Very Greek.

They are a much different team, but is different necessarily better?

Having all of the salary space in the world doesn't mean anything until they use it to bring in top-notch talent. I like some of their signings, and I agree that they do have some things to be excited about - but this team is a long ways away from seriously competing, and a #1 overall pick would certainly help speed things up for them.

A lot of those signings are depth guys, which definitely aren't bad to have - they just don't have any major parts above them. The only one you could say has top-line potential is Fleishmann - and he's been known to underachieve, plus, I think they overpaid him on his contract.

And they lost Tomas Vokoun ... who was undoubtedly the best thing they had going for them.

For those of you on the National Anthem discussion, here is a fine example of why they shouldn't sing it at every sporting event. I apologize for the video quality - I did not shoot it, however I thought it to be a good example.

In Spokane, whenever the Anthem is sung, the majority of the fans shout "CHIEFS" instead of singing "brave" at the end of the song. I usually roll my eyes when they do it.

What's funny, is that they even do it when the team is on the road.

I guess more than anything, that shows the level of brain power behind it
