AirPlay-ing My Basement.

So we're beginning to finish my basement. And we're making plans to make it "wireless."

I want to be able to have speakers around the basement, and be able to play music on my iPhone/iPod to them, wirelessly. I know this is possible through AirPlay, but I have no idea where to start.

Can I use any receiver, plug in an airport express thing, and then connect a bunch of speakers with a wire. (which I'm fine with doing, as I'll do it before finishing the basement)

Or do I attach an airport express thing to every speaker?

Or do I have to buy a AirPlay receiver?

Are there any alternatives?

Thanks in advance, I hope you understand what I'm trying to do here!

Can't help you here. The way my parents did it is they fished wires through the ceiling so though it appears to be wireless it's actually wired.

Damn, if anyone could help I figured it'd be you!

Thats kinda what I'm thinking about doing, but I want to make it so I could play my iPods music over it, wirelessly.

Go with wired speakers back to your receiver. Your walls aren't finished, so now's the time to just do it. Don't outsmart yourself trying to do things fancier than you have to. I would think you'd get much better sound quality that way, too.

Ya thanks, probably what I'll do, I assume it would be a lot cheaper as well.

Can any receiver work with AirPlay?

I.E. Random receiver + Airport Express?

Yep, same set up except I did it after finishing the walls and ceiling, so I had quite a bit of work to do to make it work. But, it's cheaper and works well. However OP, I'd definitely say with speakers you get what you pay for. Don't go for the cheap stuff under $200 without a warranty plan, they'll blow as soon as you jack up the music.

Thanks,

I work at an electronics store, so I get a pretty sick discount on speakers, I'll be sure to go for the best that I can afford.

Does anyone know anything about AirPlay? That's really the main reason I want to do all this.

Yep. All you have to do is plug the receiver into a single AirPort Express using a 3.5mm audio cable. You configure the AirPort from your computer to join your existing wireless network. The speakers are obviously hooked up to the receiver.

From there, you'll be able to play music on your iPhone/iPod/laptop and all you do is select the output device -- so in this case, you'd select whatever you name your AirPort Express. That's it.

What does Airport/Airplay do? Allow you to re-distribute the signal of a remote etc to a different location? Thus allowing you to wall mount a TV and hid the peripherals somewhere else?

This is what my parents did, this is why I ask.

Basically, for what I'm using it for at least, it's a streamer. You connect receivers/speakers etc. to airport, which your ipod/pad recognizes, then you just go on iTunes and play the song you want over those speakers. It's pretty neat, and I now know how I am going to hook everything up. thanks guys!

Now that this has been cleared up, does anyone have any other suggestions to make my basement cool ?

Built-in media shelving if you're a decent handyman, or know a lad who can do it. Also, a game table of some sort is a must. I'd go with either a pool or ping pong table. Personally, I've got a 1970's Gitoni (table soccer or foosball) table passed down from my dad. Hand man of wood legs and everything, with some obvious plastic features. I love it. But I love ping pong too, so for a cheaper, easier to attain solution go with that if there's disposable income.

This is where drop ceilings come in mighty handy.

That's what I did, doesn't look as good, though I bought premium tiles, so doesn't look bad. It is much easier to setup equipment.

Ya we have a ping pong table, I'm thinking about a foosball table as well.

We're also planning for a wet bar.

I'm really excited for this, but were doing it slowly probably over 3-4 months instead of going all in one shot.

Epic, wet bar will be sweet. I have a mini bar set up but nothing cool, unfortunately. I'm not a great handyman, so I did what I could with the room, been doing the whole basement since September, on the bathroom right now.

Also, we've been back and forth on drop ceilings, but we'll probably go with them to make these sort of changes down the road if need be.

We're gonna do some shelving as well, so I've got that covered!

My dad and brother are good handymen, not so much me, But I have good ideas

Good luck with your basement, I'm praying mine turns out the way I imagine it!

Good luck to you as well, sounds like it'll be sweet. I like the wireless AirPlay idea. Also, if you play poker, go with the poker table over foosball I'd say.

Didn't even think of that. Good idea.

Maybe I could fit all three? I don't want to push it though!

The ping Beer pong table is my # 1 for sure though.
