While this tends to be true, I'll never forget Gillis throwing $10M/yr for 2 years at Sundin. Thank god Mats was classy/wasn't greedy.

Also, I'm still not liking the Sturm signing. $2.25M for a guy who was waived last year and has bad knees?

But Hansen @1.35 is awesome

He hasn't had much of an opportunity offensively, and likely won't get it with Vancouver, as they need him for a different role. He's more valuable as a 30 point checker with top notch forechecking and work ethic, than as a 40 point supporting offensive forward that doesn't offer anything that Raymond, Sturm, Higgins and Samuelsson can't.

Be that as it may, Sundin only ended up at 10 million for 1 season pro-rated.

Don't know why everybody stresses on a second year that wasn't.

But, yes agree on Sturm and Hansen is very good at 1.35mill

Which is basically the point. With all the crazy deals being handed out getting a player a pretty much exactly what he's worth is great thing.

^^^^This.

Damn, gj Gillis. Another very, very solid signing at exactly reasonable money while avoiding the potential acrimony of arbitration.

Fantastic deal. Love the way Hansen plays. A workhorse who can put up ~30 pts. No one should ever complain about that cap hit.

He actually made just over $8 million pro-rated.

it's because people are comparing it to the UFA contracts handed out that have been ridiculous - mainly due to the rise in cap and a lot of the bottom teams needing to spend money to get to the cap... it has inflated the market.

However, this is a RFA signing, and as such shouldn't be considered that ridiculous. When you look at Boyle, for example, getting $1.7mill, this seems more fair than underpayment for Hansen. Boyle gets $1.7mill after a 20+goal season, while Hansen gets $1.35mill after a 9 goal season...

good deal, but hardly "sick" ... not for a RFA contract. If this was a UFA signing, then yes, it would be sick!

exactly what i was thinking.

The difficulty that some people have on here in understanding the difference between RFA and UFA contracts, particularly in a wierd cap hike year, never ceases to amaze me.

Great signing IMO. 1.35 is just about what he is worth right now.

Totally agree.

If you look at the Korpikoski and Boyle deals this is basically market value for Hansen as a restricted free agent. Had he put up comparable offensive stats to those guys he would definitely have been closer to $2 million per season.

Hansen's contract eats up a year of unrestricted free agency which could be as valuable as $3m. Take that plus what he's worth as an RFA and you'd be looking at 5.7m over three years if they figured what he could have been making. That's 1.9m a year.

This isn't the de facto way to go about calculating years of unrestricted free agency, but it would have been very easy for Hansen to ask for two years at 1.3 (or arbitrate) and cash out. Even if he stagnates for this entire contract he's absolutely worth more than $1.35 when you compare it to what it would cost in either assets or cap space to sign a replacement.

Also note that when you're talking about a steal for a 3rd liner, you're looking at a hundred thousand dollars rather than a million. It's easy to lose sight of that (lol) small amount.

While 1.35 isn't surprisingly low for a RFA I think it is significantly lower than both what he is worth and what he would get on the open market as a UFA. Additionally the deal is for three years. It's something that has the potential to be a Burrows-like signing.

I think you'll find that the people excited about the numbers are the ones higher on Hansen's ability.
