The development program was put him on Gretzky's line. Sink or swim.

Good call, the one I was thinking of.

The end of that clip caught my eye, I couldn't identify the goaltender. I figured it out via Hockey DB. Jean-Claude Bergeron? Exactly ONE game as a King, and I guess that was it.

Good time to start the rook, on the road vs Jagr, Lemieux and Francis.

Nathan Lafayette, a minus 4 on the night. Those were the days.

That was quite the nightmare of a lineup back then.

Stevens-Khristich-Yachmenev
Nurminen-Ferraro-Smyth
Johnson-LaFayette-Murray
McKenna-R. Vopat-Bylsma

Norstrom-Blake
Berg-O'Donnell
Zmolek-J. Vopat

Dafoe-Bergeron

It's amazing how much the roster changed in a span of four seasons from '93 to '97. Alas, it was the Aki era that turned things around for the Kings.

It's actually not a bad defense. Not great, but not terrible. A few ok forwards, Dafoe, who was decent and the rest looks like an expansion team. How did we win as many games as we did back then? Better yet, how were we not in the running for the first overall pick? Man Ottawa was a terible team back then too.

That summer the Kings ended up with the 3rd overall pick and selected Olli Jokinen. Boston had the 1st pick, selecting Joe Thornton, and San Jose with the 2nd pick went with Patrick Marleau. I know that had the Sharks gone with another choice (say Luongo), the Kings' would have drafted Marleau.

I'm still a little bewildered that as bad as we have been for a good chunk of our 44 year history, we haven't had the 1st overall pick in an entry draft (Not counting the 1967 draft since that was alloted when we joined the league and not earned due to poor performance). Three 2nd overalls, a few more 3rd and 4ths, but never 1st. And we've had some brutal teams.
