Devils-Edmonton

To Edmonton:
Mark Fraser

To New Jersey:
Chris Vande Velde

Edmonton gets a young bottom pairing defenseman. They would also make room for their other prospects that are looking at passing Vandy in the prospect pool very soon.

New Jersey gets a young player on a two-way contract who is good on the draw and would add center depth to the organization. It would also clear up room for a more promising defenseman to play with the big club.

This next deal is more of a flyer, but I can't seem to get away from it. It is dependant upon RNH being ready for the big club immediately.

To New Jersey:
Sam Gagner

To Edmonton:
Henrik Tallinder
Matt Corrente

New Jersey gets a 2nd line center to slot in behind zajac

Edmonton gets another top 4 d-man that they desperately need along with another young defenseman.

Not sure on the value of this one, but I do like Gagner in the 2nd line center spot in Jersey. Would also give Yayo another year to develop on the 3rd line.

Thoughts?

No to both.

We need centers more than bottom pairing D and there's no way I want Tallinder as a centerpiece for Gagner.

I don't think we can afford to give up that many defencemen. We're already planning to have at least 1-2 rookie defencemen in the opening night lineup, we don't want to trade more veterans and rely even more heavily on rookies.

We also have a logjam of forwards, trading for Gagner just isn't necessary. The Devils will keep Elias at centre for now, so that Yayo can stay on the third line.

I like Ganger alot, but Tallinder was by far our best minute eater last year. We need him for that sake, and for Larsson's sake. To think of it, he is the one veteran Swede we have, and with Tedenby, Josefson and possibly Urbom in the mix too, it would be a shame to see him go considering what he can Tallinder can do leadership wise with them.

This too. He's worth far more to the Devils than he is to Edmonton.

They would be two separate deals, but I get your point. I also think Elias would fit better at his natural position of Wing. You could have lines of the following

Parise- Zajac-Palmieri
Kovy-Gagner- Tedenby
Elias- Yayo- Zubrus

I always prefer 3 scoring lines and 1 shutdown line, figured this is the closest way to make that happen.

Ya, I had to include a top 4 defenseman though and I didn't want to put Volchenkov in there.

Clarkson belongs in the top 9.

Well we do have Hedberg, but the rest of your post is pretty much spot on.

The Fraser deal, whatever. I'd rather deal him for a 7th rounder or at least a grand slam breakfast.

Oh well, thought it was a decent idea. If only the damn season would start, I could focus on fantasy hockey instead of stupid trades.

No thx to both.

Gagner gone for a borderline 2nd pairing d-man

CVV gone for a 3rd pairing d-man.

I'd cry if these trades went down.

The 2nd one is pretty bad for the Oilers. No knock on Tallinder, but I don't see why they'd need to dump Gagner now.

New Jersey couldn't trade Tallinder, he is their defacto #1 defenseman and he will be probably for the next two maybe three seasons until the Devils youth can transition to larger roles.

The first trade, every Devils fan would do, except that we just signed a new contract with Fraser, and the Oilers wouldn't do it.

The second trade leaves the Devils with too few veteran defencemen, and a seriously weakened blue line. It also hampers their prospect development, and creates more instability.

Tallinder has some value, he is not a bottom pairing defenceman like some posters have claimed. At worst he is a decent #3. But the Devils cannot afford to lose him, because as Jim correctly states, he is the Devils' de facto #1 at the moment.
