The 1-year deal is a bit scary, but it buys the Devils some time to negotiate an extension. Probably saves them a bit of money/cap hit if it went to arbitration too.

He better sign an extension - I just bought my son-in-law a Parise jersey for his birthday in April! We have enough useless jerseys around...

What's your expections numbers wise for Simmonds next year? Do you think he could put up 40 points with 100 PIMS, or will he not be given enough playing time?

Anyone understand the latest NJ dealings?

Are they losing money so that every penny counts, even if they do, they aren't saving that much by buying out Hunter and White. They will add 1.6M in dead cap space though for the next couple of years I believe.

Also, imo White was pretty solid for them. They do have a bunch of young(er) d's making claims for a spot in the NHL, but an already fairly weak group of defenders will be even weaker.

Just seems a little unnecessary to me.

He's got a shot at 40 and 100, yeah. But he's going to have to be on his game more consistently than he's shown in the past.

It seems weird. I'm not sure what I think about it.

Blackhawks are locking up their key pieces. Sharp signed a 5-year contract with a 5.9 cap hit.

They are pretty much set for the next three years with their core. Their next big re-signing looks like it will have to be Bolland who turns UFA after the 13/14 season.

Colin White to SJ for 1 mil, apparently. Their D looks pretty good.

It does, but I wouldn't be too surprised if they make a trade to upgrade their forwards a bit. Vlasic? I like him, but he seems to have stalled a bit in his progress and right now their 3rd line looks to be McGinn-Handzus-Mitchell. Not that great really.

Solid signing for them though, and I'm glad that White found a new home on a contender so quickly. Shame really the way his tenure with the Devils ended.

Former Canuck and recently signed Winnipeg Jet Rick Rypien was found dead in his home today.

TSN Link

No cause of death has been announced at this time.

Edit: reported in the off-season thread, as well.

This jives with my annual prediction that the Caps will not win a Cup with Boudreau in charge or with their current culture. Vokoun sure helps, though.

Since this has fantasy included in the title, I guess I'll ask this here:

I have a 4 player keeper league, and I'm having a difficult time choosing the 4th player. My team is:

C-Kopitar
C-B. Richards
C-Lecavalier
RW-D. Brown
RW-L. Eriksson
RW-Kane
RW-Havlat
RW-J. Williams
LW-M. Cammalleri
LW-J. Benn
D-S. Weber
D-Doughty
D-Meszaros
D-Staal
G-Hiller
G-Backstrom
G-Roloson
G-Montoya

So far I think Richards, Kopitar (health pending), and Kane are surefire keepers. I'm up in the air about the rest. Brown is good for his hits as well as his points. Eriksson is very consistent, but lost Richards at center. I'd keep Hiller if I knew he'd be healthy going into the season. Havlat has a nice new line to play on in SJ, and Vinny has been wildly inconsistent for the passed couple years.

I'd love some opinions

edit: forgot to mention, the league favors offensive categories...so while Weber and Doughty are fantastic players, they probably aren't keeper worthy here. Sorry freakydallas

Only a couple of weeks after securing Zach Parise for the 2011-12 season, the New Jersey Devils will open the campaign without their No. 1 center.

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello confirmed Thursday that Travis Zajac, who finished third on the club last season with 44 points (13 goals, 31 assists), will miss the first month and a half of the season after undergoing surgery to repair his left Achilles tendon. Zajac suffered the injury Wednesday during an off-ice training workout.

"He'll be in a cast for a week and then he'll be in a walking boot right after that," Lamoriello told the Bergen Record. "Then, it's the healing process, which takes around three months."

Losing star players for extended periods of time is becoming a NJ tradition

It's nice to be nationally televised and it says a lot that we're tied for the most appearances, but I prefer the local broadcasts.

I think with vs becoming a part of NBC, we can expect somewhat better coverage...

The flyers are one of the top 3 supported franchises in the NHL. There's a reason they always have their stuff advertised on the NHL main page. Usually with Boston funny enough.

Looking at the VERSUS slate, the Flyers could be limited to one home game through the season.
