I like it if he's willing to carry the load at Rockford. Been saying we need a real goalie to be our #1 for a few weeks now.

Everybody goes on about Emery's personality but the dude's career was OVER as recently as a year ago. That says a lot about the guy. I say give the guy a shot.

Exactly.

This guy is determined. No, make that obsessed. Most with his condition would have simply retired or settled for playing part time in a lower league, and besides ... a little competition in training camp is always a good thing. At all positions.

Let's be realistic about this.

Ray Emery age on opening night: 29 years old

Ray Emery career regular season:

173 GP .908 SV%

Ray Emery career playoffs:

36 GP .903 SV%

Ray Emery is 29 years old. We know what he is. He's a .905 SV% goalie.

He wants to be No. 1. I'm sure he'll cost at least 900K on a 1 year deal.

Alex Salak

Alex Salak age on opening night: 24 years old

08-09 TPS
52 GP .923 SV%
09-10 Rochester
48 GP .910 SV% all-star
10-11 Farjestads BK
32 GP .926%

Why would we want a .908 SV% with a bad hip over a one of the top goalies not playing in the NHL. There is no reason to hand over the backup job to Emery. He's not that good and overrated in a big way and that's not even considering the hip injury, his past problems or his personality. Unless of course you think the hip injury made him better.

Emery was lights out in his limited time with the Ducks.

And no one is talking about "handing" him anything, everyone is talking about competition for the backup job.

That can't be a bad thing. May the best goalie win.

First, as Sevanston mentioned, Ray isn't going to be "handed" anything. He doesn't even have an NHL contract yet...

Second, Ray Emery's stats outside the NHL:

AHL - GP162 .920SV%
KHL - GP36 .926SV%

The NHL is a different animal, Emery was a starter a year and a half ago, and was great in Anaheim last year. If he wins the job, he wins it.. either way, the better goaltender will back-up Crawford.

Different type of shots, different workload, different environment, different players. You have to prove it at the NHL. No matter what you have done in Europe, CHL, AHL, etc etc, you still have to prove it in the NHL. There have been plenty of players who have been great prospects and just because a guy does it in other leagues doesn't mean he can do it in the N.

Yeah, my fault. Forgot he had already been over here for a good amount of time.

Didn't actually read the article yet cuz I'm about to go to sleep and can barely keep my eyes open, but this article was on the main yahoo page which is more the reason I'm sharing it than anything else. Just found it odd to be front page, Yahoo news.
