Hearing Devils have placed Trent Hunter and Colin White on waivers. Would be prelude to buying them out.

I have been wanting Colin White on the Habs blueline for awhile.

I would love the Habs to pick him up if this is true. He is the exact type of dman the Habs need and should persue.

Trent Hunter is interesting too. Though he has come off a serious injury, has he not? He has size and plays a decent 3rd line winger. He also has a right handed shot. Something the Habs should be interested in.

But the Habs should be putting in a claim for White and they have the money to do so.

Am more surprised at White than Hunter. I would think someone will sign White shortly thereafter, Hunter might have to wait for a training camp invite.

Kind of players that you know were good but you don't really keep up with, and all of a sudden one day you hear they got waived...

Time passes by.

3-4 years ago, he would have been an excellent fit. Now he's very injury prone and nowhere near the same player.

Colin White buyout from CapGeek.com
2011-12: $1,000,000
2012-13: $1,000,000

Trent Hunter buyout from CapGeek.com
2011-12: $666,667
2012-13: $666,667
2013-14: $666,667
2014-15: $666,667

Seems like a lot of $ to waste for a team trying to get Parise signed long-term.

I kinda expected Hunter, but White? He was like our best dman last season.

Hunter would be a perfect addition to the Kings 3rd line.

I wonder if this is pinching pennies or prelude to another move? On the surface, at least, I don't really understand adding $1.6 million to the cap for the next two years (With a subsequent $600k for the two years thereafter), unless it's an owner who wasn't happy about Parise's $6 million or hoping to add another salary (This will clear $3.6 million in cap space for next year).

You're not even saving that much real money because somebody has to play in White's spot this year. So you save 1mil from the buyout, but have to spend at least .5M on the player replacing him.

It's a cap space move, the only explanation.

I think White will get claimed. There is always a team looking for a good solid shutdown dman. He only has this year left on his contract. I don't think they will worry about buying him out.

I think given Hunters health, a buy out is coming. White should be claimed, but the NHL these days you never know.

How is Hunters skating these days? Sharks need a 3rd liner badly.

More fringe players for Gillis to take a chance on. I can see Hunter being the type of player Gillis would love to give a go with still some potential there.

If the Leafs could move Komisarek, I'd love White on our defense

To be fair, White is a member of the defensive dman surplus we have, but keeping him over salvador is odd. Wonder if lou was up to shinanigans with salvador last season and he's cutting him some slack so long as he doesn't whine.

The team has plenty of cap space though, unless this means a big trade is coming up.

If this is purely a roster move I don't get it. White was fine last year and can still play a solid shutdown role against tough minutes. Perhaps Lou is opening up an extra spot for one of the young defensemen.

Concerning Hunter, I'm not surprised at all.
