Don't forget with NJ actual cash outflow is a huge motivating factor. All we as fans tend to look at is cap hit... but ownership has to consider real dollars as well.

For the 2012-2013 season, between Kovalchuk and Zajac alone, the Devils will be laying out about $5.3m in cash above the cap hits... and that doesn't mention the fact they have several other players set up the same way at the same time, just to lesser extents.

they're saving 500k only. doubt that's the reason.

Dunno wtf they're doing but we'll find out soon.

I didn't expect him to be bought out. I expected him to be buried in the minors because he's an overpaid 4th liner.

Hunter > Henrique

With White gone that means the #4 through #7 defensemen will consist of Larsson, Taormina, Fayne, and Fraser with Urbom as the first injury call up.

Well, Lou just told TG is was "budgetary", not sure I take him completely at his word though.

White is that typical 2nd pairing defensive specialist that most teams crave. I would be surprised if noone picks him up for 1 year @ 3mill.

New Jersey has gone from one of the best managed teams (pre-lockout) to one of the worst (post-lockout).

Lamoriello said the decision to buy out both players was budgetary and because of depth of young players on D and at RW.
If I am correct, that leaves the Devils defensive depth as:

Volchenkov
Tallinder
Greene
Salvador (hasn't played hockey in more than a year due to injury)

Larsson
Corrente
Fraser
Fayne
Taormino

(not necessarily in order)

Really surprising, because I don't see any of this alleged defensive depth that makes White suddenly expendable -- especially not at the cost of a cap hit penalty for two years.

Don't know what's going on in NJ really, but some team out there will get one hell of a defensive shutdown d-man in Colin White.

I can't believe he was bought out before a guy like Salvador really.

One team in this league will be extremely happy when they sign Colin White. I guarantee you that.

he does not get claimed at 3 million , Rangers don't have the space and even if they did the D is set as is going into camp

surprised the Devils waived both of these guys

This is really out of left field. White is one of the best pure defensive defenseman around....someone is going to pick him up and have a great player.

If Lou makes a trade for a big name defenseman or if one of the rookies impresses then this move will look good down the road. But right now White is one of our best defensemen and a guy who SHOULD have retired a Devil. Just doesn't make sense unless something else is going on.

Well it's basically guaranteed that neither is getting claimed, considering Lamoriello came out and said he was buying them out if they clear.

I'm wondering about this, too. Unless, despite his recent assurances he's preparing for the season, Salvador is still likely to be unable to play and you can't buy out a player who's injured, you've got to wonder about this one.

This

Completely shocked about White, he is a very good defensemen and has given his entire career to the Devils. This makes no sense.

Gulitti also says that Lamoriello told White at the end of last season that he'd be trying to move him this summer. After getting no takers, it was Buy-Out city for White.

Devils ownership throwing in the towel? Absolutely moronic moves this offseason. Very disappointing. I'm officially fed up unless there is another deal in the works.

If this is it for the offseason, I wont blame Parise one bit for leaving. Shameful how this team has been run lately.
