Lamoriello said the decision to buy out both players was budgetary and because of depth of young players on D and at RW.
If I am correct, that leaves the Devils defensive depth as:
Volchenkov
Tallinder
Greene
Salvador (hasn't played hockey in more than a year due to injury)
Larsson
Corrente
Fraser
Fayne
Taormino
(not necessarily in order)
Really surprising, because I don't see any of this alleged defensive depth that makes White suddenly expendable -- especially not at the cost of a cap hit penalty for two years.
This is really out of left field. White is one of the best pure defensive defenseman around....someone is going to pick him up and have a great player.
If Lou makes a trade for a big name defenseman or if one of the rookies impresses then this move will look good down the road. But right now White is one of our best defensemen and a guy who SHOULD have retired a Devil. Just doesn't make sense unless something else is going on.
To be fair, White is a member of the defensive dman surplus we have, but keeping him over salvador is odd. Wonder if lou was up to shinanigans with salvador last season and he's cutting him some slack so long as he doesn't whine.
I'm wondering about this, too. Unless, despite his recent assurances he's preparing for the season, Salvador is still likely to be unable to play and you can't buy out a player who's injured, you've got to wonder about this one.
Well it's basically guaranteed that neither is getting claimed, considering Lamoriello came out and said he was buying them out if they clear.
Gulitti also says that Lamoriello told White at the end of last season that he'd be trying to move him this summer. After getting no takers, it was Buy-Out city for White.
Devils ownership throwing in the towel? Absolutely moronic moves this offseason. Very disappointing. I'm officially fed up unless there is another deal in the works.
If this is it for the offseason, I wont blame Parise one bit for leaving. Shameful how this team has been run lately.
