Otherwise there are young d-men we could be developing.
I think the Oilers will be hard pressed to make it out of the lottery this year, much less make it all the way to 20th place. That's a 25 point improvement based on last year's numbers. I don't see that as a reasonable concern, even with White in the picture.

What a horrible comparison on so many levels. Anyways I've seen him play and id have to disagree.

Seriously, some of you need to ignore hindsight when you're evaluating situations.
That's why every fan on hf wanted their team to claim him?

Don't confuse a few VERY loud people who won't let it go with "every fan"

He was hardly a slam dunk, and to suggest otherwise is just false frankly.

Yea, I am not the every other fan. The one problem that I see with Grabner (watching a team like Boston go far) you need top forwards that are nasty in there demeanor.

Also take it for what it is worth he is on a team getting a lot more oppurtunity.

I didn't want to grab him last year, because I liked that this team could get RNH in the draft.

I didn't want him, because at that time last year, he was barely an NHLer, and the Oilers had enough fringe NHLers on their own at that point.

Yea, for me (also must add I appreciate the honesty) I seen him play in Vancouver not so much in Florida. I seen a Omark type player (more offense) who wasn't committed enough to defense, and liked to take shifts off.

So I guess my assessment at the time was he was probably equal with alot of the forwards on the team.

People on the forum have to be rational and ask themselves what they expect from a player when playoffs/playoff drive comes and they need that player to perform.

Vancouver was a top team who could have used that offense, and thats a team teams are going hard at, and this player was basically mailing it on some nights.

Sure, but at the time they probably didn't want to take any salary on. Month later things change.

Plus, White would be a pretty good mentor coming from an organization like New Jersey. At 3M per, 1 more year there is no risk at all just like Barker.

EDIT - And he could have some serious value at the deadline to a contender.
Completely agreed. People are nuts if they think that we couldn't use White on our blueline, he would immediately be our 2nd best defenseman and a great leader for the youngsters, this seems like a no brainer to me.

White is looking like Jason Smith at the same age. He might have one or two servicable years left.

Still, as a transitional player I would take him on a one year deal. Doubtful though. We already have Sutton.

He cleared waivers so we can stop thinking of claiming him.

I'm a little disappointed, but this was hardly a can't miss situation, so I'm not really that "upset".

I just feel like this was an easy opportunity to improve our defense, and it wasn't taken.

Contracts come into play. Can't waste it on a minor upgrade like White.

That was probably my only concern with picking him up. It definitely would have been a risk, but picking him up allows us to make a quantity for quality type trade and it not hurt so bad.

They are most likely getting bought out anyways. That was the whole point of waiving them. It makes more sense to try and sign them as a UFA for less of a cap hit than taking them from the waiver wire.

White was on a cap hit we can handle on a 1 year deal.

Signing him to a contract at this stage of his career to come to Edmonton probably would take the same or more money and more term.

$3 mill for 1 year was great. I imagine the worry is that contract taking up our last available spot.
