White and Hunter clear waivers and move closer to a buyout. Interesting to see what Devils may do with their cap space.

3M for 1 year is not a ****** contract, especially for someone who's put in as much time as he has. Hunter will now be paid for the next 4 years to not play for us.

Lou needs to explain this move.

Hunter is easy, it amounts to 666K for 4 years as opposed to 5M for 1 year. Whites buy out amounts to am extra 2M this year. That's almost 6.5M freed up this year.

There is obviously a move coming.

Why would any team claim White for $3M when there are other unsigned D such as Campoli and Hannan who can be signed for less than White's salary. If a team really wants White they can sign him on their terms after the buyout.

I hope you're right, because if it's a salary dump it's time to start asking questions, more than before,

I do not know enough about how contracts work regarding buyouts vs. sending them to the minors etc. in relation to cap hit/real dollar amounts etc.

I am not even sure how to word my question properly but I will try

They way the Devils waived these two with the intent to buyout the contracts... was it the best way to make cap room for a potential trade or signing..... or was the waive/buyout a move to lower the Devils budget?

If the Devils wanted to gain as much cap room as possible , would there have been a better way to do so instead of waving and buying the contracts out?

I just want to get a grasp on this to try and understand what the intentions of doing this was? Was it purely a budget thing ( which creeps me out as Devils always spent to the cap ceiling) or is it posturing themselves to make room for a trade ?

What if a team can't convince White to sign? Picking him up off waivers guarantees you get him.

It's also helping New Jersey out, which I would imagine is not worth it just to get White.

I imagine White is not worth the extra money to dish out for a forsure waiver claim vs. trying to sign as a UFA. If he does not want to sign for less moneyas a UFA then its "Meh , we will try Hannan then"

Exactly. Missing out on UFA White isn't going to ruin anyone's offseason.

Yeah but at the same time is there any need to save money? Most teams have the cap space to fit him in no problem. White only had 1 year left, too.

If the Devils just wanted to clear cap space, they could have waited until the pre-season and waived/loaned them to the AHL - I don't believe either has an NMC. They would have counted against the cap during the off-seson (when there is a 10% cushion) and then counted zero against the cap during the season - of course, the Devils would have been on the hook to pay out their full salaries.

Instead, by buying them out, the Devils save real $$$'s - the buyout is 2/3's of the salary paid out over 2x the remaining years - and save some cap room but accrue some dead cap space due to the buyouts:

Colin White buyout from CapGeek.com
2011-12: $1,000,000
2012-13: $1,000,000

Trent Hunter buyout from CapGeek.com
2011-12: $666,667
2012-13: $666,667
2013-14: $666,667
2014-15: $666,667

If you don't need him and you just want him, why spend 3 when you can wait and maybe get him for 1.5?

This is the funniest thing I've ever heard. I'd love to see an NHL GM say this to an owner.

White had a NTC but agreed to waive it.

An NTC wouldn't have prevented the Devils from waiving/loaning White to save even more cap space than the buyout - only an NMC blocks that.

I was hoping this was a move to gain cap space to acquire a top 6 C/RW or PMD but appears to be just budget related move
Our current D is looking pretty shady. Counting on alot on rookies to step it up this year.
If A-Train goes down or Tallinder.... we are in deep trouble. Also putting alot of faith in Tao/Corrente/Urbom/Larsson/Fraser to be able to step it up.
Salv hasn't played in a full year and it is not known if he will be 100%.
Looks pretty risky to me but who knows.
