A war of attrition to get Shea Weber or Ryan Suter in orange and black in place of Matt Carle.
That is the entire point of the 2012 offseason for us. We have forwards, we have goalies, and we need to address our defense making it younger and better.
EDIT: You can pretty much pencil vanRiemsdyk down for 3.75m/year unless he breaks 90+ points this season. I'm willing to bet money that he gets a Claude Giroux-esque contract.
My number one goal is to see Holmgren go an offseason without signing a Leighton, Shelley, or Lilja. I know he can do it...he only signed a Lilja this year, but signed both a Shelley and Leighton last year. That shows improvement.

Once there is a CBA in place don't the bonuses come off the cap hits?
If they do won't Schenn's hit go to 1M and Bob's go to 900K?
^ If true that bonuses will not count against the cap:

hold on there...
if we get suter,
and if weber signs a 1 year deal with nash (so he can be a UFA in '13)
we could easily pull weber from UFA with kimmo/hartnell money
(and we have suter, so weber would want to join)

Even with the bonus cushion in place, the bonuses do not come off the Cap hits. You can use the bonus cushion to be Cap compliant, but they don't come off until such point as it is apparent that the bonuses will not be earned during a League year.

So... Yes, bonuses count against the cap?
or... No, bonuses do not count against the cap?
So... Yes, bonuses count against the cap?
or... No, bonuses do not count against the cap?
Would you care to elaborate?
Well first of all there's the misconception that a team has to be at or under the Upper Limit to be Cap compliant. That is not true. A team can go over the upper limit with LTIR or using the bonus cushion to stay cap compliant. Bonuses do count against the Cap, but a team can carry them over to the following Season if the bonus cushion is in effect for that Season, if the bonuses put a team over the Upper Limit. That is the technical explanation for how it works.
For the everyday jo schmo fan, you can look at it for practical purposes that because they can carry the bonuses over to the next year, that they don't count.
