Del Zotto learning to fight

http://www.snyrangersblog.com/2011/0...ning-to-fight/

I love it...the whole team should learn to fight....stick up for each other....id love it if the rangers stars like Gaborik and Richards would fight a little..they are the rangers leaders and should stick up for each other on the ice.

Rather him just learn how to play defense and use his head a little more.

I second this. We have Prust, Dubi, Rupp, Callahan and others willing to drop the gloves when necessary. Del Zotto should focus on his defensive game or become more comfortable with his offensive.

Say if he the closest one to Lundqvist, when Hank gets bumped into, he should have to stick up for Lundqvist if no one else does

Last guy who tried to learn how to fight was Hugh Jessiman.

I remember reading how Jessiman was taking boxing lessons and all this other non sense and then in a pre season fight takes on Steve Downie and Downie whoops him...guy had 6 inches and 30 pounds on Downie and still got it handed to him.

Either you know how to fight or you don't...stick to getting the puck up to Richards and Gabby kid...don't want to have to see you get carted off the ice.

Fighting/boxing is a very good work out, too. No reason for him not to get a little sparring in between him practicing defense.

Its not the worst thing in the world.....

Boxing is a great workout for any athlete. Learning how to properly protect himself if he NEEDS to fight is never a bad thing. It doesnt say he is going to run around and start punching people left and right.

I don't think he's actually going to try to be a fighter...this sounds a lot more like something fun to do on the side for him and maybe it'll come in handy in a scrum when he's trying to defend Lundqvist or something.

Don't read so much into this stuff, jeez.

And where does it say hes learning how to fight? His tweet says hes throwing lefts like Domi. How do we know hes not just hanging out with Avery and some cops?

You gotta love how in 2011...when someone writes a short sentence, it not only gets it's own web page, but a whole thread, also.

Come on.....

You are seriously saying that Marian "made of glass" Gaborik should fight because Chara occasionally drops them?

Del Zotto should be learning how to play better defense and how to QB a power play effectively, not "learning how to fight". And the thought of Gaborik learning to fight after the way Carcillo handed him his lunch a few seasons back is even more ridiculous.

Leave the fighting to the fighters, concentrate on what your role on the team is supposed to be.

And people wonder why social media doesn't catch on with more athletes and celebrities, just look at this thread and that stupid SNY post.

The people in this thread are a joke. Getting on the kid because he is trying to better himself.

Normally, I'd agree with you sentiment, but this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

And judging by his positioning and instincts in the defensive zone the last 2 seasons, it probably wouldnt hurt to be concentrating on defense 24 hours a day.

So then where was the thread when Del Zotto said was spending his time while rehabbing his hand watching tape of Lidstrom and Dan Boyle so he could see how they make the plays they do?

Getting upset about this is dumb. He's not actually going to try to be a fighter. Most likely he was training with Prust and it just came up as "hey, show me how to throw a punch here". The odds that he's spending any significant amount of time on this are very low

When you can't stop em, just beat em right.

Nothing wrong with MDZ adding some "grit" to his game. I'm sure he's still working on his defensive game, just a change of scenery.

I think he is just doing it to quickly pick up the basics of this particular skill in case he needs it. Kind of like your dad teaching you how to set up a tent and start a fire - he doesn't want you to live in the woods, he just wants you to not stand there crying if you ever need to do it (in the modern world, these skills are obsolete because who would think to leave the house to go somewhere without the playstation?)

MDZ is likely just having fun spending a few minutes after practice having one of the tough guys teach him. I doubt it comes at the expense of other skills. In fact, I bet this shows a commitment to an all-around game, that he recognizes that hockey isn't just about offense.

I also remember people mocking Dubinsky when he first started learning how to fight.

Very valid point, changes my stance on this.
