didnt we trade our 2012 2nd for the mez dispenser? also, i doubt fla will give us their 2012 pick in a deep draft... i'd bet upwards of a dollar that they'll opt to give us the 2013 2nd rounder instead since they have the choice.

Well the draft pick Florida gives us is conditional. I don't know what the condition is, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they have the choice to give us either or.

Oh, that could be. I was under the impression that the condition was they could choose. We'll find out. It would be nice to have an early or mid 2nd this year though. I think the King's pick will be in the 50-60 range.

We could really go all out on drafting this year if we traded carles UFA rights for a 2nd or 2nd +a 3rd in 2012
That'd be like 4 2nds in 2012

(Then sign suter of course)

Why do you keep talking about signing Suter. Are you willing to give up the picks to offersheet him. You realise he isn't UFA right?

signing ryan suter is key this offseason.

Because Weber is a RFA this year, and likely wants to see the UFA market in 2013.

so we sign suter this year, and become infinitely more attractive to Weber (when he hits UFA in 2013 we will lose kimmo/hartnell)

in 2012 we get suter
in 2013 we get weber

sure we pay the free market price, but we dont lose picks...and we've got the cap to get two franchise D-men to replace kimmo/pronger, why not do it??

I've gotta think that we're not the only suitors for Suter. Just off the top of my head Detroit will have Niklas Kronwall AND Nicklas Lidstrom as UFA.

Assuming Lidstrom retires. I've got to think they throw BIG dollars at Suter.

Who esle could throw big money at him? Which are our top competition to get him signed?

Also, is it too late to think contingency?

Assuming we don't get Suter who are our contingencies?

Barret Jackman
Tim Gleason
Bryan Allen
Greg Zanon
Niklas Kronwall (DRW will more than likely sign him though)
Francois Beauchemin
Dennis Wideman
John-Michael Liles
Johnny Boychuck
Randy Jones (LOL)

I'd almost rather have Carle than some of them.

Exactly! Shelley's was 3 years.

I'm trying really hard to be positive today.

Detroit are going to need to replace lidstrom. I see them as front runners if Nashville cannot sign Suter

Maybe add Tyutin and Stuart to that list. I'd take Carle over quite a few of those actually, assuming their salaries are the same.

Ryan Suter is one of the best defenders in the game, I'd love for him to play for us, but I'm not gonna hold my hopes up. He should be making quite a nice sum of cash on his next contract. He is by far the best dman of next years ufa crop and going by the contracts given out this summer... his could be ridiculous.

Should I bet any money on his next team, I'd go with Detroit as well. They should have plenty of space to use on him (and potentially on Weber the year after). Lidström, Kronwall and Stuart are ufa's, as is Hudler, Holmström and Bertuzzi.

Jumping on Weber, Boychuk, and Gleason would thrill me. Kronwall may be tough to pry away from DET. Should make an easy transition from Timonen and Pronger to no Timonen and Pronger....

edit: probably be pretty expensive though

True Missed those. Tyutin, isn't really known for his puck moving abilities though... since we are trying to replace Carle, I'd think that we need someone who can make the breakout passes.

It's funny you mention that Tyutin isn't known for his puck moving ability, yet the past three seasons in Columbus, he's had 34, 32 and 27 points. I think he could be a more than adequate replacement for someone on the blue line. I still don't know if Holmgren moves Carle though. It's very possible that he re-signs both Carle and Coburn and looks after signing his own free agents. If there's money left over, then I can see Holmgren going shopping.

Fair enough. I thought that he was more of a shutdown guy. Numbers don't lie though.

How much are Carle and Coburn contracts?

If we plan on keeping both. We should probably try to get one signed before the season?

I also think before Holmgren goes shopping in 2012, the league needs to get a CBA in place first. And that worries me because it's possible another lockout is on the horizon, especially if owners are wanting to get rid of guaranteed contracts and are looking at finding a smaller gap between the salary cap floor and ceiling.
