On the bright side, at least now Mcginn will have a literal "point-less" buddy next season.

2007-08: completely dominates in some CHL preseason games and gets an NHL deal...plays for Lemaire on the 4th line and limited minutes, very snake bit offensively. Work ethic is questioned and he clashes with Lemaire some.

2008-09: plays third line center and does a decent job, but still not looking like a 1st round talent...obviously lost all confidence offensively and tries to play a more physical game, which isn't impressive.

2009-10: new coach and fresh start, he looks pretty bad most of the year, slow foot speed, no offensive ability, can hold the puck decently on the boards but that's about it, lots of time in the press box.

2010-11: lots of talk in the offseason about needing to prove himself, signs a 1-year deal, and then injures himself on an ATV before training camp...spends the entire year injured and then rehabbing after getting surgery on his knee.

My outlook is that he's going to have to really dedicate himself to become a bottom six player in the NHL. Poor foot speed combined with a serious knee injury doesn't give me confidence. He was supposed to be one of the smartest players in his draft year, but never showed it. Seems like the game passed him by. Not much to speak of offensively either. Good size though.

Hopefully that 3rd rounder is a bust... I hope.

Looks like it. Unless it's a 4th line signing... definitely not worth a 3rd liner though.

Fail to see how Sheppard is better than Wellwood, judging by what the Wild fan just said about him..

Oh god. I'd rather have Wellwood + our 2013 3rd rounder over James Sheppard. Why, DW, WHY?

He conflicted with Jaques Lemaire because Lemaire tried to teach him the NHL game and Sheppard... since he's been playing since he was 3, already felt he knew all he needed to know.

If you take an attitude that you have nothing left to learn, when clearly you are the most lost looking player on the ice all the fricking time... there's your development problem!

He's got no speed, no hockey sense, plays even worse when he tries to play a physical game, has no vision... Honestly, most Wild fans would have been happy with a bag of pucks in return, so a 2013 3rd rounder is better than we ever dreamed!

For what it's worth... he's got good practice in making the pressbox popcorn, maybe that's why DW wanted him?

Sheppard is 6'2 210. That's the only thing he has over Wellwood.

The expected value of a 3rd rounder is an AHL role player

Way too much fretting over this

Is there any possible way that this trade was necessary to make way for another move?

Not really.

I'd like to hear a DW quote on this one. He'll probably mention that he was a top-10 pick.

The smaller the trade, the worse DW does it seems. I hope this isn't our solution for the third line.

Unless a team wants James Sheppard, I doubt it. Usually you trade a player to make room for another one.

You mean instead of his usual "So and so has Stanley Cup Playoff experience and a ring?"

Maybe DW wanted to draft Sheppard, and he sees something in him.

I don't really like the trade. A 3rd rounder for Sheppard, a guy that you will likely sign to a two-way contract and have him play in the AHL most of the year, is not great value. When healthy, he's got a lot of the skills you want but he doesn't have the mental side of the game even close to the level needed to succeed here. This deal is predicated on the Sharks being able to turn his development around after he gets healthy and I don't have much faith in the Sharks to turn a young project player around.

Need another move though even with this to address the top nine.
