Hard to say if he's in the Wild's plans. Due to some stipulation of not enough games played or whatever, they can offer him a two-way deal now if I remember right. I think if both sides can agree to something like that and Shep can get some significant time down in Houston, maybe things could turn around. If he's not willing to accept something like that, I'm not so sure they'd be willing to offer a one-way. Sort of a wait and see sort of thing.
On a side note, Twins comment above is funny.

Thanks for the reply, was just looking at the 06 draft and was curious.
I would think he would accept a two-way after missing a year.
The Wild aren't in a position to be throwing away any prospects.
At the very least, Sheppard could be a 3rd line center for the Wild in time.
Let him try to make the team as a 4th line center, and if not, send him to Houston for a year or two. Even if he spent the next 3 seasons in Houston, he'd be 25.
I wouldn't say Sheppard would be a 3rd line NHL center at the least, more like at the most. They can obviously do one of two things, either offer him a two-way contract and see if he can not only get to training camp without an injury but make the team, or else just part ways. My guess is they try and get a two-way contract. He's still a 9th overall draft pick, poor development or not.
So, how much popcorn will James do next season or will he make some minor popcorn?
Hmm...
He'll be showing off his awesome popcorn making skillz in San Jose! DW heard how great James Sheppard popped popcorn was, and he was so excited about it, he traded a 3rd rounder to the Wild!
I was going to post one of those noisy and super fast renditions of "for hes a jolly good fellow" to commemorate the occasion, but it seems like I can only find slow renditions on youtube that make it sound like someone died.
I must just suck at searching youtube. Dammit, I wanted to be clever!
