The fact that the Preds had two players eligible for arbitration makes this buy-out possible. I think that even if Sergei Kostitsyn signed a deal prior arbitration makes him count.

I'm not 100% sure but I think that if Lebda was put on unconditional waivers, the hockey staff certainly did some research to know if it's possible to buy-out Lebda. The other possibility is that the report was uncorrect and that it's regular waivers and not unconditional waivers

You might be right, I was trying to follow mirtles conversation on twitter. Looking at the CBA it's kinda unclear how it works.

Mirtle was citing OntheForecheck, a Nashville blog. It's well written, but not overly reliable as it pertains to things like this. I think dirk Hoag's interpretation may not be entirely correct.

Another possibility is that Poile asked around the league if anyone would take him off waivers and got a response--Florida, NYI, Winnipeg...someone like that--and they're making him available that way.

I think he has two days to clear in this situation. White and Hunter did.

That's correct, however there is also the caveat that the NHL office is closed on Sunday, therefore any player put on waivers on Saturday doesn't clear until 12:00 noon EST on Monday.

I was away when this happened, so maybe this was already covered, but what is the deal with the timing of this? Seemed kind of like a random date to do this, especially with the weekend, and it's not like there is some other pressing issue or deadline approaching right now so what am I missing?

There is a secondary round of buyouts after arbitration if two or more of your players file. They are doing this within this secondary buyout window...

This possibility would be some much needed good news.

Sergei never went to an arbitration hearing. Filing and going to a hearing are 2 separate entities. Key words are "pursuant" followed by "to 12.3(a)".

For Clubs who have Club or Player elected Salary Arbitration filings pursuant to Article 12, within the forty-eight (48) hour period beginning on the third day following the later of: (i) the Club's receipt of its last salary arbitration award; or (ii) settlement of its last case (provided such award was received or such settlement occurred after 7:00 p.m. New York time; awards or settlements that occurred or were received after 7:00 p.m. New York time will be deemed to have occurred or received the following business day for purposes of this provision).
The one case pursuant to 12.3(a) was not the team's only case. We'll soon find out how these apparently contrasting portions of the CBA interact, but, there is a case to be made that the Preds can in fact buy out Lebda's contract.

You sure do care a lot about Brett Lebda's contract situation. Whatever floats your boat.

Just sent a tweet towards Darren Dreger and Bob McKenzie from TSN. This really isn't any real news of significance, but it certainly does interest us here in Nashville...

Good job guys.

Darren Dreger

@SLakePreds @TSNBobMcKenzie. Lebda cleared waivers. Original plan was to buy him out. Doubt that has changed.

My question to Dreger (since there was some discussion about whether or not the Preds could buyout Lebda) was whether or not the plan was still to buy him out after he cleared waivers.

No one was going to claim Lebda at $1.4 million. Dreger just confirmed that he was in fact being bought out...

As per capgeek, nashville is at 48.7 mil, and the floor is 48.3. Won't a Lebderp buyout send us back below the floor?
