if parise had a contract extension, then it would take weber. you're not getting one of the best forwards in the world, even as a rental, for nothing.

Giving up Wilson, Ekholm, Lindback, and a 1st for Parise at the deadline would be entirely too much. Take Lindback out.

I say Wilson and Lindback and a conditional pick.

at the end of the day, that's very similar to what the thrashers got for kovalchuk. sure bergfors and oduya both fell apart, but still. that's the precedent you're working with here. at the time it wasn't guaranteed that kovy would re-sign with the devils.

i guess if you wanted to get really technical and follow the kovy deal to a t then the devils could add somebody minor, let's say zharkov, and swap seconds as well.

Bergfors was never as highly regarded as Wilson. Oduya was essentially already develiped and in a protected system. One could argue that every piece the preds are offering in the above outclasses the devil offer by a little to substantial amount.

Agreed. I don't think Cormier was as highly rated of a prospect either.

Does using what Kovalchuk got in return as a standard really work? I mean, Parise is a hell of a player, but Kovalchuk is obviously the better scorer. He is a career PPG player. Parise is 80 pts away from that. He also spent the entire year hurt last season. I'm not saying that is going to change how good he is, but to think it doesn't play some sort of role in his value I would argue is disingenuous. We should realistically give up less in a deal for Parise than NJ gave up in a deal for Kovy, but as has been mentioned above, the offer of Wilson, Ekholm, Lindback, and a 1st is arguably more than Atlanta got in return.

but as a rental, he wont get even as much as Kovy got, unless there is a significant bidding war.

at the deadline Parise will fetch a solid prospect, a lower level roster player, and a 1st rounder at the very most, and honestly probably not that much.

the devils will be in the hunt this year they damn near came back from the dead and made the playoffs at the last min last season so they are not gonna be shopping ZP imo ..for the sake of argument though it will take a mighty hefty package to land him

Who says the Devils are guaranteed to be going into the playoffs?

There's no reason for Parise to sign a one-year pact unless he's interested in seeing what Free Agency is all about. At the very least it indicates he's not very interested in giving New Jersey a hometown discount -- and why would he, after the deal Kovalchuk got?

The Preds can't afford to trade for a rental unless the lock up Parise for at least a two or 3 year deal with that they won't do the deal

I am too or he wouldn't have signed only a 1 year deal. Plus players know their own roster as well as coaches and gms too. Broduer is on his last leg and Parise must know that his chances go down far as winning with that in mind

This is the same reasoning people are using to say Weber doesn't want to be here. Just sayin'

Except Weber decided a 1 yr to leave him at RFA. He wants to stay here, he just wants Poile to get the pieces.
He easily could of requested 2 yr at arbitration

I'm not defending the idea. I'm saying that it exists.

The difference is the Devils made a bad deal for Kovalcuk and Parise knows that the Devils are capped out because of it . Where Weber know that Suter and himself and Rinne are all coming into their primes and the Preds are not capped out they just imposed their own cap and they should add more. Maybe I'm reading this wrong but this deal had to do with Weber more or less saying are you going to do within reason to bring in some offense and let us(big 3) have our run because with our defense we don't need 3 lines scoring all we need is one big scorer. If that's the case then Weber not the bad guy he is just calling their bluff are you serious about winning?
