At best Woywitka is probably #8 behind Weber and may have Diaz and/or Mitera ahead of him on the depth chart.
That's what I was thinking.

Yes I have, which is why I was wondering if my evaluation was wrong. I know when we sign a player, their capabilities are automatically inflated x10 , but I don't see much more than a depth player here. He really reminds me of Picard, maybe even worse.

Could be a great AHL signing, if thats the real gameplan here. I wouldn't want to count on him for anything in the NHL.

Didn't have a great reputation in Dallas if I recall correctly. I don't think we'll say too too much of him this year. As long as he's not as bad as Pyloncard defensively, I'm okay with him as a depth guy.

Markov, Subban, Gorges, Yemelin, Weber, Gill, Spacek, Woywitka.. That 8 defensemen ranging from elite to "serviceable".. Plus we have Diaz and Nash in the wings.. We should be alright.

With luck, we won't have to find out.

Rule of thumb if you are on any habs forum, is when the team announces a signing, no matter how little and insignificant it is, you must write:

'decent depth move'

He's certainly worth it

I really don't see him playing in the nhl this year...in order to play he'll have to beat out Weber, Yemelin and Spacek and even at that, Diaz would probably be the most likely call up.

It's strictly a depth move and should be viewed as such.

So Mitera = Fischer ?

Big 1st round bust ?

I'd rather re-sign Mara than signing Woywitka...

ive watch Wit when he played here in edmonton- showed a flash of O once in a blu e moon- but sure wasnt physical at all and seesm to lose alot of battles- and yes does make the big Gaffe
and yes Mitera is a bust- his knick name should be MIT - because when he fights(very rarely and for a good reason) he catches alot- id rather have mit romney on the dog roster

Can we assume (and hope) that Mitera and Woywitka will be on Hamilton's roster for the whole season then ?

The non signing of Hamrlik is starting to hurt now...

Wow, too many here speculate too much and go over the edge in regards to signings, and non-signings.

Before this signing people were fine with the D, now people are saying Gorges is gone, Hamrlik should have been re-signed and so on...wow, too much!

if mit plays in the nhl for habs this season- then we know the D is going to be decimated with injuries--- Wit? the better Dman and he does have some experience- going to depend if MArtin gets a weird crush on him

How is Woywitka an improvement over Sopel or Mara? Both of which said they'd have considered a 2 way contract.
It's always fun to see a new name with the Habs but let's be honest here, I don't see how he's a better option then a proven NHLer that we had a choice over. I know he's going to be a depth guy for the Dogs but we could have had a better fill in with the 2 aforementioned players.

So Mitera is a bust because he can't fight?

Last year was his first full season since his junior year at Michigan. Injuries have hampered his development, but he's still not a bust.

Solid cheap signing.

And if it makes people angry that we signed him instead of Hannan...well all the better then!

He will be a good 6th Dman if we lose one of our regular Dmen to injuries. He was 6th on Dallas and he did well for his role.

Actually it's because Yemelin is not coming over afterall. His name isn't on the Habs roster while Wit's is already there.

Woywitka I remember as a guy with a pretty good reputation as a defensive dman...obviously, he didn't pan out as expected and spent alot time in the minors. But he seems to have broken through (although he'll never be the dman he was supposed to be) the last 2 years to at least become a dependable depth dman.

It's just depth, nothing more...ideally, he'll never play a game for the Habs this year. But it's good to know that if the Habs come across anymore injuries as has been the custom the last decade, that they won't have to run an undrafted NCAA (like Brendan Nash last year) out against NHL competition before he's ready.

Dallas did not re-sign him because they wanted to give #44 to Souray...

And Montreal did not re-sign Hamrlik because they wanted to give #44 to Woy.
