Five Who've Shined; Five Who Should Ride Pine

OK, its very early, but who do you all consider as the top 5 Pens performers thus far, and who have been the least impressive five Pens?

Shining Five:

1) Rico Fata
2) Marc-Andre Fleury
3) Brooks Orpik
4) Joe Melichar
5) Konstantin Koltsov

Underachievin' Five:

1) Marc Bergevin
2) Drake Berehowsky
3) Nolan Baumgartner
4) Matt Bradley
5) Matt Murley (not too fair - he never had much chance to shine)

Ryan Malone, Sebastien Caron and Mario Lemieux got consideration, as well as Edzo (he is a new Pen, just not a playing one) for the shining stars. Malone lost out because his first three games were not that spectacular. If he plays many more games like his last, then he'll definitely be on the list.

As for the underachievers, well, Dick Tarnstrom hasnt wowed me with his start, and Marty Straka didnt have the best of games against Detroit (except for his great finish on his goal). However, Marty, whose effort I can never fault, seems to be a liability on the PP at the point position. I wonder how many more short handed breakaways on him will it take before he's replaced there? I did notice Orpik got some PP time late on. I dont blame Marty totally, as he's one of two pointmen, which is kinda one reason Tarnstrom almost made this list too. Kraft didnt get on this list because he'd only played one game, and for him, he actually had a decent game.

I know its really early, and chances are that 20 games into the season there will be a bunch of usual suspects appearing (Lemieux, Straka, Tarnstrom), but am curious to see who you consider to be the best and worst Pens thus far.

Good list. I do think though that "Underachievin' Five" is being very PC. I think a lot of others might call them "Useless pieces of monkey $#&t."

Holy Crap? Bradley? He's one of the few mistake free players.

Shine
1. Marc-Andre Fleury
2. Rico Fata
3. Aleksey Morozov
4. Josef Melichar
5. Ed Olcyzk

Bad
1. Drake Berehowsky
2. Dick Tarnstrom
3. Marc Bergevin
4. Mike Eastwood
5. Brian Holzinger

I can't put a guy who wasn't given a good shot in the bad. Even though Fleury only played 2 games, I have to give him the nod for number one. 46 saves.

I was not sure whether to include Bradley or not. I only added him as I felt he was a non factor for most of the games I have seen (I have seen 3 - the Flyers game was wiped out for satellite feed problems on Center Ice). Perhaps I was a little harsh to pick him over a couple of others. I hope he succeeds, as he is one guy I am hoping will shine.

Bradley, to me, is the type of guy that doesn't really stick out. He doesn't make any huge mistakes, but he won't go making any highlight reels. Just a steady 3rd line performer.

It's pretty hard not to notice his hits, though.

Shining:
1) Fleury- prety damn good for 18
2) Fata- seems to have learned to utilize changing speeds
3) Koltsov- working hard and making things happen
4) Orpik- mean streaks are good
5) Melichar- playing good after a long absence from the game

non-shine:
1) Bergevin- seems to be faltering pretty bad
2) Morozov- other than a few assists, he's been invisible
3) Berehowsky- i was hoping he would do better
4) Eastwood-otehr than face off's, doesnt do much
5) Holzinger- just doesnt really fit in

Raider with Morozov on the bad list...what a suprise :p

He hasn't been getting the points, but he thoroughly impressed me in the Detroit game.

I've been impressed with Morozov. 1 goal and 3 points in 4 games is not bad, if he keeps up those numbers all season I will be quite satisfied.

Raider is totally off base with Morozov.
I've only seen 2 of the 4 games and Alexsey has been one of the best 3 Pens in both games.

I like this list of non-shiners a lot. Somehow I totally overlooked Holzinger. He can definitely replace Bradley on my list of underachievers. I guess my mind has tried to tune out his presence on the team

I think Holzinger's biggest contribution to the team thus far was to get the double minor penalty against Detroit that allowed us to score our short handed goal and spark the comeback.

Morozov gave me a debate for my top player.

He has been a totally different player out there. He seems faster, is going to the boards and is seeing the ice a lot better.

i've been listening to all the games, and i'm basing morozov off the fact that i never hear ANYTHING about him. i have yet to hear "good play by Morozov", "nice move" or anything of that sort. so no, im not just putting him on their because i hate him, im putting him there because i havent heard of him doing anything good. i cant se teh games since im at school, and my friends have yet to tell me anything about him doing good. also, i havent been hearing his name been thrown around here as one of those sticking out during a game.

Both games I've seen so far, the guy just looked to me like he came to play.
Making the right passes at the right time, back checking, etc.

Outside of the blind pass giveaway for a SHG, I think he's played real well. He'll never be a Selke winner, but he's getting back and making an effort on D.

And the GTG vs. Philly last week was, I think, something many of us were waiting for. In the past, I think he'd have tried to make a move/pass into the slot/slow down the play. Instead, he gathered the puck, and fired it.

Go Pens: your Shining Five I agree with, in no particular order. Those five have made the biggest impression on me so far, as well. They all have a pretty bright future if they can stay healthy and play hard.

Take Baumer off the Pine list; he needs a lot more ice time before anyone can make a fair judgement.

Bergevin absolutely sucked last night (and other nights frankly). Friend of Mario's or not, joker in the room or not, he should not be on the ice. He can't even get the puck out of his own zone half the time, even when there's space available to do so. He's slow, he can't hit, and he can't move the puck... what good is he? Make him a defensive coach and get his ass behind the bench, not on it.

I never figured on Berehowsky making an impact; not sure why anyone else did, but...

Also, Holzinger needs to be on the list. He's had zero poise with the puck the times I have watched him closely.

Eastwood is pretty useless except for the rough stuff, but we all knew that coming in.

Other than these four, I would put the others on the "wait and see / playing average quality" list. It's all relative friends; we're not the contenders we were a few years ago.
