This means nothing. A couple of years ago(I think 06/07 Season) The Hockey News had the Canucks to finish in the bottom of the Conference and ended up winning the Division. Let the players do their thing and prove the media that the Jackets are a better team then what people think.

I am a glass half full kinda guy. Personally, I expect the Jackets to be competitive as do most of us here.

But lets face it, what do you expect out of THN? The franchise here has really not done much historically. So when it comes time for the benefit of the doubt as far as improvements to the team, we're just not going to get it. We're just one of those teams that they're going to dump on until such time as the Jackets hitch up their pants and prove "them" wrong. For the most part, own fan base has projected 6 - 11, THN has just chosen the lower side.

I hope Arniel or Nash takes the projection and pastes it up on the locker room wall, to remind everyone how they are perceived and to do something about it. "Our time has come lets do something about it" works for me as much as "Hardcore Hockey".

How could anyone think about picking a team that's made the playoffs once in 11 years, to finish 12th?! While I do think we will be better then that, im not shocked at a pre season rating for a team that has been perennial losers for all of its existence. And like it or not, they picked us 14th in the west last year, and we finished 13th

That said Jackets will take 1st in the West for the next 10 years. Quote me.
I concur.
(Viqsi's condemnation not withstanding.)

The reason we made the playoffs that one year (I forget it was so long ago) was goal tending, and the two years since it was goal tending which gutted the team's confidence.

Fortunately, Howson has ordered a copy of this book...

Fine by me if THN sets the bar low. I hope all the other teams go into the season expecting the usual lousy performance out of the CBJ, too. A couple months of surprising other teams sounds like a pretty good idea to me.

Pretty much par for the course eh?

I guess I would have been more shocked if I found out they picked us as a top 5 playoff team. Seems like a very safe bet for them to discount all the moves that have been made, as well as projecting 2/3 of our roster (all relatively young guys), to regress.

Never really liked THN anyway, they bristle at having to even discuss Columbus Blue Jackets hockey.

Where have I heard this before? Oh yeah, pretty much every off season in recent memory.

Oh, and I seriously doubt teams will care about where we project to finish with the media.

Good catch! It's the same every year. And no, the teams probably don't give a **** about what the media say -- unless they can use it for a source of motivation.

I don't think anyone is going to pick the Jackets to make the play-offs until they actually play well enough to get there.

I know they added some players, but I still don't have a lot of faith that our D is going to be that much better.

Playoffs? Nah. 12 seems harsh. No biggie though.

As many have posted often, it comes down to goaltending. If Mason (or Dekanich) is around .895-.905 with a GAA around 3, expect about 11th. If he performs at about .915-.920 and 2.5 GAA expect about 6th. Hey- if he goes .925 and a GAA of 2.3 expect a top 4 seed! and I'll believe that when donkeys fly

I don't buy something as simplistic as it "All comes down to goal tending".

Agreed

If it was that simple, why weren't the Flyers 12th last season?

The reasoning process that they employ to get us at 12th seems devoid of any real merit.

With the offensive improvements and no real defensive improvement, if anything slight regression defensively, I'd expect this team to score maybe 20-25 more goals this upcoming season. They lost 33 goals departing players, and I am allowing for the new players, plus development to score about 50-55 goals. I figure Carter is good for 35g, Wisniewski about 7g, and the remaining 8-13 from increased production from Clitsome, as well as more ice time for Calvert and probably Mayorov. For this reason, the team needs to reduce goals allowed.

If this happens, I believe they also need to give up about 25-30 fewer goals on the season. While hopefully Wisniewski improves the defensive corps offensively, I'm not counting on him or Martinek to make enough defensive difference to make up for the loss of Hejda AND veterans like Clark and Moreau. This puts the onus squarely on the goaltenders.

If the Jackets had Carter, Richards, Giroux, JVR, Leino and Hartnell, coupled with a number of very good shut down players like Betts, added Timonen, Pronger, Meszaros and Coburn, making the playoffs wouldn't come down to goaltending. Hell, just add a healthy Pronger and Timonen and the Jackets would be a lock this season.

I have no idea how it can be said "if anything we regressed slightly" on defense.

Klesla never really played, Commie was gone quick, and Stralman is now gone. I know we lost Hejda, but that doesn't bother me as much as it seems to bother others. He hasn't been Hejda in a year and a half now.

As it's been said, this season is all on Mason. If he doesn't improve to say a 2.50 GAA and .910 Save Percentage, 12th is not out of the question. I don't believe goals will be a problem this year, so Mason needs to be at least somewhere between last season and his rookie season.

THN = Toronto Hockey News

Fact is Columbus is an improved hockey team, a biased hockey magazine is not going to acknowledge that. Can see why the fanbase is pissed at the overrating of the Blues.

So glad it's to the point that even with all our roster moves, it's all on the goal tender.
