But that risk applies whether you sign him at 25 or 30 or 35. It comes down to whether or not it's reasonable to expect the player to still be playing at the age in the contract. And in this case, it's pretty reasonable to expect that.

Besides, I doubt the NHLPA has a problem with these contracts, and I don't see any reason why they'd agree to lowering the age that contracts fall into the special cap calculations from 40 to say 36 or 38. Having the option of adding those years is what makes the front-loading (the part of the contract that's so attractive to players) possible for the team to pull off. Good luck changing that.
Part of the reason we haven't seen strong opposition to these deals is because none of these long-term cap-circumventing contracts has actually hit those later years yet. When we get to 2017-18 or something and all of these decade-long contracts start hitting those years where a guy you're paying 1M is costing you 5.5M against the cap, you might see GMs start to think, "Man, we really screwed this up."

But there's obviously a discount factor involved, so most GMs have simply decided not to worry about it for now.

It's Garrioch so take it for what it's worth:

With those thoughts in mind here were some of the more shocking deals in the first 48 hours of free agency (including some that were signed before players hit the market):
Quote:
D Christian Ehrhoff, BUF (10 years, $40 million): Yes, I get it, new owner Terry Pegula wanted to flex his muscle in his first year with the Sabres. But this is just bizarre. We’re not talking about a Ray Bourque or Bobby Orr here. Ehrhoff will get $18 million in the first two years.

Right, because if we were they'd be getting twice as much.

The tone of this article really bothers me. This guy is basically insinuating every GM is incompetent and then the quote blames these signings for an impending lockout. Please. What the hell do they expect Florida to do, for example? Perhaps they could be a bit more ingenious at how they reach the cap floor, but the portion of the CBA the league pushed for is putting many teams in the position where they have to make bad contracts. Now those teams are going to be to blame for the ramifications?

It really seems like the writer doesn't have a grasp of the fact that the cap (and, as importantly, the floor) went up substantially and salaries thus can't help but be inflated.

What's comical but typical of his usual hypocrisy is that Garrioch ripped the Senators for not being willing to pay Redden what he eventually got in NY - and Redden was no better or worse at that time than what Ehrhoff is now.

I think a lot of people seem stuck in the 1990's when it comes to NHL salaries. Erhoff likely made more in his rookie year than Orr did in his entire NHL career. That's just the way the NHL has evolved.

Who cares how much money he gets paid, his cap hit is all that matters, and it's a meager 6% of our total salary. He's the 6th highest paid player on the team.

To put into perspect the 18mil that Ehrhoff will get in the first two seasons.

Vanek made the exact same amount in the first two years of his current contract back in 07-08 + 08-09.

Vanek will also make more total money on his 7 year deal than Ehrhoff will in his 10years deal. 10mil more.

Ehrhoff's deal is hardly a crazy massive overpayment contract.

Exactly. It's structured in a way that's both player (money up front) and team (easy to buyout) friendly. When all's said and done, we're paying at or slightly below market value for a guy who was a huge part in the Canucks counterattacking offense.

I wonder if Christian's signing bonus check cleared so that he can get himself a nice birthday present today?

It was announced that he had one but I could never find specifics of it as far as team numbers and whatnot.

According to WGR, Ehrhoff is in town and will meet with the Buffalo media at 9AM today. Their morning show had an interview with him.

"I didn't see that [Cup chance] with the Islanders so I decided not to take their offer, which was a great offer they made [five years for $23 million]," he said. "The next morning I woke up and was with Buffalo and went through the process again of talking to ownership, management and the coach.

Ehrhoff may have had 40 million reasons to sign with the Sabres but remember how close he came in June, as the Canucks got to Game Seven of the Stanley Cup final before losing to Boston. So he's a player who clearly puts a priority on winning.
Quote:
"Christian fits the way we play," said coach Lindy Ruff. "We're a team that has our defense involved and gets up ice. If you look at the way Vancouver's defense played and were involved in the offensive side of the game, it's an automatic fit."

Ehrhoff sees similarities between the Sabres and Canucks since both teams play a high speed, up tempo game with the defensemen expected to join the rush.
Quote:
He'll be busy honoring numerous ticket requests from family and friends to see he and his new teammates when the Sabres open the season in Ehrhoff's native Germany.
