The following season the Washington Capitals faced salary cap restraints. Looking for move salary, they attempted to trade Michael Nylander, but found no suitors for his near $5,000,000 salary. The Washington Capitals first loaned Nylander to the Detroit Red Wings organization (who then assigned him to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League) and then later loaned Nylander to Jokerit of SM-liiga where he finished the 2009-10 hockey season. For the 2010-11 season, Nylander is playing in the Florida Panthers organization's AHL affilite in Rochester as they fill a hole at center. His NHL rights remain owned by the Capitals through the end of the season.
On October 23, 2010, Nylander was seriously injured when he was hit from behind by Brendan Smith during the second period of a game between Rochester and the Grand Rapids Griffins.[2] He underwent successful spinal fusion surgery on October 26, 2010 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY and doctors have said that he should be cleared to play again after 6 months of recovery.[3][4]
That sounds pretty bad. He's going to be 39 in early October as well. I'd rather not sign him, but I really don't see him making the team anyways.

The Flyers have invited Michael Nylander to camp on a tryout. This isn't coincidence. Nylander helped Jaromir Jagr put up some very decent numbers when both played in Washington and with the Rangers.
Nylander will turn 39 this October. He's not young, but ...
In 2002-03, Nylander had 56 points and Jagr had 77 as Caps, working together. In 2005-06 as a Ranger, Jagr scored 54 goal with 123 points, working lots of times with Nylander. Jagr had 96 points the next season ('06-07). Nylander's stats for those two years were 79 points and 83 points respectively.
So Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren is hoping Nylander and Jagr can click again?
"Partly," Holmgren told CSNPhilly.com. "Michael is a good player and he wants to try and earn a spot."
It won't be easy. Bill Guerin was a very good player last fall and didn't make the cut in camp.
Nylander played briefly in Rochester last season. He suffered a severe spinal injury last October in the AHL which curtailed his NHL career as a Cap.
Bringing in a veteran center during camp who Schenn and Coutier can bounce questions off of and just talk to is a good thing. I mean, Briere is there as well, but Nylander is a smart player and could help them some.
Tryouts bring up the compete level in the players IMO. Nothing wrong with it really unless you think they are taking "valuable ice time away from prospects". We have one or two of these guys every year. Betts, and Dowd made it on tryouts and Guerin and Bell didn't. I doubt he makes but if he does he must be a warrior at 39 to beat out the plethora of guys wanting the roster spot.
I'd be VERY happy if he were to stay and sign with Phantoms. He could be a great mentor for some of those guys.
me too and i thought it was kind of expected given his history with jagr as well.
i like the general idea of a veteran center though. coming off an inmjury and playing in the ahl who knows maybe nylander could play for the phantoms
