Who will be the 2011-2012 whipping boy?

It seems (to me) a majority of fans pick out certain players and pound on them until they get traded or retire. Nature of being a sports fan.
For me, the past 2 seasons it was Connolly, before that Afinogenov, and before that Kotalik (oh no).

Who will be (or who do you expect) the 2011-2012 whipping boy?

My money is on Boyes. He had that hot start when he came over but he fizzled out fast.

He just doesn't have the mental fortitude to drive to the net and create opportunities for himself and the team.

Easy, Leino.

New city, new system, new teammates, and new position. It's logical to assume an adjustment period, during which he wont be very productive offensively and will make plenty of mistakes defensively. I think the effort will be there, but the true results wont show up until 50 or 60 games into next season.

But that wont stop fans from ripping Leino apart and calling his contract a bust right out of the gate.

There's also a good possibility that Erhoff will be slow out of the gate due to a deep Cup run and a summer spent healing more than working.

Stafford, who knows whether he'll continue to get better or if he'll get paid $4m to be a 40-50 point player.

Although Leino's probably a better choice for that reason...

1. Boyes - unless he produces equal to his big contract.

2. Stafford has an good chance at the honor as well.

3. Leopold if he plays at less than last year's stellar performance.

Hecht. Because he gets 3.5 M per year but doesn't score goals, as that is the only barometer by which his worth can be gauged.

Leino because of his contract. easy.

Boyes already is, so I'd expect to see that continue.

and Ehrhoff might get some criticism if he isn't the game changer we expect for 10 mil this season.

There's a direct correlation to who the media pick out and who the fans subsequently do IMO. TBN has famously chosen targets in the past that become repeatedly the subjects of editorials and columns that criticize salaries, lament flaws of particular players and champion the idea ad infinitum of how much better the team would be if they dump player "X". I'm not saying that fans don't form their own conclusions but the constant press coverage that focuses negatively on certain players is bound to influence the public perception of any player. I don't think it's a coincidence that the three players you listed were all blatant targets of WGR and TBN staffers during their times as well. Heck, I'll admit that my own disdain for Connolly was certainly heightened by the repeated reports I heard from the media about his practice habits and avoidance of scrutiny.

I think the safe conclusion to reach from all of the predictions above is this: any player that doesn't perform up to expectations (either based on past stats and/or salary) will become a focal point of criticism - and that the players targeted can change often during the course of a season. I don't think there's any current player on the roster that fans just dislike regardless of their play.

I like the variation here. However, I'd have to say Hecht and Boyes. Boyes was all last year after we got him that's a no brainer. And Hecht simply because of his contract. I don't think so much as Leino because everyone is aware of his situation. I think fans will show him some mercy. IMO I don't like Hecht I don't see what he brings to the team, other than leadership. He's invisible when he plays and we could easily get someone with a cheaper contract to replace him that would fill his role. As for Boyes he has massive potential in my mind. He just needs to use his skill in a positive way.

Nobody!!!!

We all now live in Pegulaville and everything is fantastic!!!!!

We will start the season on a 12-3 record and be one of the best teams in the league...no one will get the wrath Connolly received, imo deserved.

I think either Leino or Ehrhoff, or Kotalik. Cause Kotalik was in Buffalo before then NY then edmonton, or something. And Calgary. He Hasn't been good but the expectations. Leino is getting paid a lot and Ehrhoff is a Top Dman, so those 3 are huge candidates. If anyone blames Miller I will slap them with a fish because he is great every year

Maybe Kotalik will be a whipping boy for Amerks fans. He won't be for Sabres fans.

Regardless of the stats, arguments, or wonderfully written novels about how good he is. Gaustad is my whipping boy. I will give all the "newer" team members, rookies and sophomores a pass this season. My personal definition that works for me ... Whipping boy = want off the team.
