Of course he was on the block. But the Zajac injury makes it impossible to move any relevant forward now really.

Yup. Zubrus has been on the block for over a year now. I doubt Lou was seriously trying to move him but if the right deal came along...

I agree with you. Even as a Rangers fan, Zubrus does alot and is a good player, and even if some think hes over paid, hes no where near the Chris Drury or Wade Redden category!

if Colin White was bought out with apparently trade attempts made before hand, i think it is safe to assume that just about anyone with a sizeable salary was on the block.

My point was if we are cutting costs. For all we know for the next few years we won't spend to the cap because of the actual cash spend.

If on the block means Lou fielded potential offers for him, then sure. Why wouldn't he? And Lou is pretty clear when he says he will listen to anything anyone has to say, that's business.

He may have contemplated unloading him because it's fairly obvious we were trying to shed salary as much as possible and between the three Zubrus probably had more trade potential because, in spite of contrary beliefs, that contract really isn't that bad. The real issue is what people equate to salary numbers.

I also don't think Zajac had anything to do with it unless a valuable - and sizable - center was coming back in return but perhaps at a smaller salary (which, who the **** was that honestly going to be anyway?).

Either way, glad he's still here and frankly, I hope he continues to be for years to come. I like his character and think that translates into positive things that may be intangible. For a team whose been plagued by malignancies as we have over the years, I think letting him go would be foolish on that principle alone.

I don't have to name names, they're not here anymore for a reason.

On the whole, I agree with you. There are obvious exceptions though. I don't think Elias was ever seriously shopped, or even offered.

Kovalchuk makes 6 million this year. The jump in pay happens next year. Rolston's and White's contract would have been off the books by then.

And you don't hand out that type of deal unless you are willing to spend that amount over the cap. Otherwise just sign a normal contract.

My bad, thought it was this year.

Well then maybe cutting some salary to bring in some big name PMD this or next year. Who knows.

Truth. good point actually. The end being low is important, but the extreme values are something to be noted.

Which is why this ownership thing is beginning to scare me

I can't judge yet whether I'd want to re-sign him. Only if he is still effective, and willing to take a lot less.

Im a fan of Zubrus. To put it simply with his relation to the team, he is a necessity. At this point there is of little to know value in trading him unless we get someone who is a legit #2 center and even then I'd hesitate.

If we can get a good 2nd line center or a high pick I would do it. Thee rookie count on this team scares as is tho.

I also like Zub and his work ethic. However, he just doesn't produce enough offense to consider re-signing him. And isn't it a little premature to discuss resigning him, I believe he's here for another two seasons or is it three more years?

Another two seasons. His contract expires the same time as Elias's does.

the idea of trading zubie reminds me of the scene in Ghostbusters 1 when Peck comes back to shut down the containment unit.

(Egon = Lou; Peck = Lou's cap adviser, also named Peck; Venkman = Conte)

Secretary: Lou, I tried to stop them. They say there's a problem.

Lou: Excuse me, this is a private meeting.

Peck: Trade this Zubrus off. Trade them all off.

Lou: I'm warning you, trading off the Zubrus machine would be extremely hazardous.

Peck: No, I'm telling you what's hazardous, you have about a half dozen cap-hit-to-production violations, most of which have a no-trade clause, now you either trade these guys off, or we'll trade them off for you!

Lou: Try to imagine, this is a high-voltage laser containment Zubrus. Simply trading him off would be like dropping a bomb on the team.

Peck: Don't patronize me. I'm not grotesquely stupid, like the fans you've bilked.

Conte: Excuse me officer, I don't know why that man is here, but I will cooperate with him in any way I can.

Peck: Forget it Conte, you had your chance cooperate, but you thought it would be more fun to insult me. Now, it's my turn, wiseass.

Lou: He wants to trade off the Zubrusaur, David.

Conte: You trade that thing off, and we are not gonna be held responsible for the decreased ticket sales when the team sucks.

Peck: Oh yes you will. I'll make sure that you will.

Conte: No, we won't be.

Peck [to intern with roster spreadsheet]: Take him off.

Conte [to intern]: Don't take him off, I'm warning ya.

Intern: We- we don't have anyone else like him. I'm not sure...

Peck: I'm not interested in your opinion, just take him off.

Conte: Whatever your name is, don't be a jerk.

Vanderbeek: Step aside, David.

Peck: If he does that again, you can fire him.

Vanderbeek: You do your job, pencilneck; don't tell me how to do mine.

Conte: Thank you, Jeff.

Peck: Trade him off!

I wouldn't re-sign Zubrus. Sooner or later his body is going to start failing him and what you'll get is a big soft man who doesn't produce offense. I'd let him ride out his current contract though unless it prohibits a bigger signing.

Depends on how much money and how many years he's looking for, and how well his level of play is holding up. I wouldn't rule out having him re-sign yet.
