We just felt the after effects. Not the earthquake. People need to relax.
My bed and chairs did shake as well, but we had the same exact thing happen a few years back. If a 5.9 magnitute earthquake would hit New York, all hell would break loose.
I am no believer in one person or one theory. There are very many dynasties in the past 1000's of years ago that all predicted certain events. I happen to believe in one of them.

As for the candle comment to some other person... I have two small puppy maltese that are still trying to be house trained. So I lit a candle my wife has that is scented so my house didnt smell like pee-pee.

Boy this crowd is VERY critical if you dare think outside the box.

Your all right. The world will never end and there is no God and we all are the only species in the entire galaxy.

Laugh if you want. Thats fine with me. I am not hear to make friends or try and sway your opinions either way. Your entitled to yours and I will never argue with you over your own opinions because it is not an easy task in changing ones mind on such monumental issues as God, E.T.'s, World Endings, Nostradamus ect ect. But on the same token, I am entitled to my own opinions on topics.

God bless all and I am done with the conversation now.

Checking in from VA here..I'm about 155 miles from the epicenter. Some good shaking, no damage. Fun stuff.

Grow up? I'm not the one with the tin foil hat. Sorry man but your opinion is wrong and completely misguided as evidenced by the video I posted. I'm not sure if you know that Neil Degrasse Tyson is one of the world's most respected astrophysicists . If you actually believe that nonsense without legitimately researching it, you need to hear the truth. If you choose to ignore that, you should seek professional help.

I work a few blocks south of you. Was on a teleconference with someone in DC and he said his building was shaking, thought it was an earthquake and asked me if I felt anything yet. I didn't but a minute or so later I did.

It's kind of weird when someone on the phone tells you you're going to feel an earthquake before you feel it.

Well, the epicenter was pretty close to a nuclear reactor so it could have been a big deal.

I don't think that phrase means what you think it means. Your thoughts are so far outside the box they aren't even inside the factory where they make the boxes.

The world isn't supposed to end for another 4.5 billion years, which is when the Sun is going to explode and engulf the Earth. I don't think I'll be around in 4.5 billion years though

Or until the radiation from the nuclear meltdown at Fukushima drifts over.

What prediction are you referring to? If you're referring to the Mayan long count calendar, 12/21/12 is simply the end of the 13th baktun and the beginning of the 14th. I'm no expert but I'm not aware of any predictions the Mayans made for this date on their calendar.

The Sun isn't going to explode. It's going to basically puff itself up into a red giant and possibly envelope the earth. However, long before this happens, perhaps in less than a billion years, the sun will heat up enough to boil away all the oceans.

That's all misguided baloney used to cash in on hysteria -- book sales, movies, etc...

You'd be hard pressed to find a single shred of evidence to the contrary

How dare you think you know what will happen in the future. Its obviously against what HF is all about!

Hope everyone is OK and that the quake didnt cause any damage or injury/death!

I lived in CA for a few years up until october last year and know all about earthquakes.
I remember my first 5+ magnitude like it was yesterday! The worst one was the Baja quake in april of 2010 though, it was 7.2! Scary stuff even when you are used to it!

Ever read NASA press releases when they divulge that something they recently discovered was "totally unexpected" or contrary to preexisting models? They are discovering new crap all the time that refutes preexisting theories and models.... Safe to say there is more in our Universe that we do not know, than we do know.... The absence of doom predictions in the media from reputable scientists does not provide for any peace of mind... Even if they did know that danger was looming, they wouldn't tell us with a press release, it would be suppressed by world governments as to not create mass panic and hysteria.

Stellar evolution has been studied for over a century once spectroscopy was discovered. There are millions of datapoints showing how a sun-like star evolves over time.

But now you made me hungry.

Which NASA press releases are you referring to? There are plenty of problems with trying to model events that can't otherwise be observed (asteroid collisions, long term weather events, etc.) but the fundamental theories have been prettty soundly tested and confirmed over the past few decades. There are naturally going to be some things we don't really understand at the fringe of our knowledge (e.g. anything with the word "dark" in it), but planetary motions and stellar evolution are pretty well understood by now.

Plus, virtually all data from NASA observatories are readily available to researchers around the world. And there are no laws against private citizens having a large telescopes so there really isn't much that NASA could hide from us unless they got a phone call from ET himself.
