OT: Hurricane Irene

Hopefully the mods allow this thread to stay. Hurricane Irene has shifted her focus on to the mid Atlantic and north east states. It's no longer a threat to Florida.

Latest guidance is converging into a landfall right over LI just east of JFK while still a hurricane sustaining 74mph winds. Still is 5 days out but there is great concern if this were to come to fruition. If todays runs came to reality this would be a disaster for the 5 boros and all of LI.

Couple the amount of rain we have gotten of late and how the ground is saturated..we should anticipate record flooding w/ plenty of downed trees.

Just a heads up..something to follow/keep an eye on for the weekend.

Latest track from the NHC :

Gotta drive from Virginia to NY tomorrow. Leaving at around 12, am I going to be caught in this?

In all seriousness, only a fool would challenge nature. I love it though, it's so exciting. I'm pissed that I missed the earthquake. I mean you enjoy it but at the same time you hope the damage is limited. Kinda like watching the Knicks

Let's hope it fizzles a little so it can put on a small show while not doing any real damage. That's a perfect storm.

Surfers are grateful in NJ, I'm sure.

Anyone remember that small tornado we had last year? It was about a mile and half from me. I remember walking through the streets with all these trees around me totally in awe of the power. There was nothing like it. I hope that doesn't happen with the hurricane though. Once is enough

The 00Z rgem (canadian) which is typically not good in Hurricane season, has come in further west of the other runs.

Considering my job is entirely dependent on weather, I guess I'm done for the year.

Here are some analogs of similar systems w/ similar tracks via guidance:

TS DORIA:

HURRICANE GLORIA:

HURRICANE FLOYD:

just to name a few...

However, Most of these did weaken considerably in terms of winds by the time they got to the area

Floyd was pretty intense where I live, Rockland County. I was 13 then and loved it, whole town flooded, was really something to see. 12 years later, I have now bought a house in the same town and my back yard and basement has some flooding problems due to the river and low foundation. I am gonna have some problems come Monday...Damn.

So if we actually get hit, exactly how bad can it get?

Sorry I'm no expert, but I literally have no idea what that means, besides the fact that we can get hit. Care to explain please?

As somebody in Law Enforcement I remember working during Hurricane Gloria in 1985 and it was not fun. I believe it was only a category 2 at worst and Suffolk County was without power from 5-10 days.

My opinion, dont expect a hurricane. But we will most likely get hit with heavy rains for an extended period with potential of some strong winds. Cant speak for all areas, but there will be flooding if this storms follows in its projected path.

I missed hurricane Gloria--was living in Sweden at the time and by the time it made it to Stockholm all it brought was fantastic weather. From what I remember, because the ocean is not as warm here as down south, it's very unlikely that this area can get a hurricane much higher than a category 3--but that would be bad enough (pretty sure the huge hurricane that smacked LI and New England back in 1938 was "only" a category 3).

It's not something I'm looking forward to.

If it tracks the way the op says, yes, indeed, Nassau county will be in the crosshairs.
