Great cheesesteaks and I always found it amazing how he could attract national attention for a small sign.

The size of the sign was not important... the words were huge.

In his 'different time' his family and friends were allowed to spend their money wherever they chose... when they came to America his family may have even pointed to something and paid for it without being turned away in ridicule.

I find it disturbing that in this day and age he was allowed to hang that sign... and not be forced to take it down.

It was private property, regardless of being right or wrong, it IS his right to post it.

I'd **** a chicken if those rights were violated.

legally it should be accepted, but socially no. His shop should have gone out of business b/c people should boycott racist ideals.

i think thats what he was saying...he wasnt asking for gov't intervention.

edit:
"had to take it down" to stay in business.
(was my take)

Yes and no... I personally would never give him my business after that happened...

It wasn't "racist" at all. If you tried to order in English, you would be served.

He simply wanted the recent influx of South Philly Mexicans to make the same effort his parents/grandparents made.

Lets not pretend that figuring out what kind of cheesesteak some one was ordering in spanish is really that hard. Maybe he should have made the same effort that his grandparents made. Conveniently he wasn't the one that had to make the effort.

I honestly don't care about the sign. I just hope God speaks English.

Who cares about a restaurant owner's opinions? All that matters is the food is good and the service doesn't suck. It's not like the guy was making national policy.

I can definitely see situations where Spanish-speaking people held up the line, ordered something, ended up getting something they didn't want because they weren't understood, then complained and caused problems. It's not like all Mexicans were turned away; only the ones that couldn't speak English were.

I'm not pretending that.

It's just a clash of mindsets. First generation Italian immigrants made damn sure to learn English so that their kids could fully assimilate and do things like open gaudy cheesesteak places. They pride themselves on it, for better or worse (I speak from familial experience)

Nowadays in South Philly, you see second, sometimes third generation Mexicans who don't speak a lick of the Queen's.

Vento didn't like, so Vento put up a sign to that effect.

Its his business, and his business is well known to move quickly and accurately. That's why there's a certain way to order a steak. If I remember correctly, Pat's said that they'd gladly take the non-english speaking customers, but they also run a line that is just as quick and accurate. I think that's what drew the sign, not the fact that he didn't want non-english speakers ordering at his facility. He knew more than anyone that his establishment was a tourist attraction.
