Maybe he will develop a little from the age of 20-25 .

The worries shouldn't be about Hedman not being a star at this age, the worries should be that he lacks integral cogs necessary to be one.

Ekholm. Ekholm. Ekholm.
He'll never get the hype on here because of his draft position and the team that drafted him (he's way down on the Preds depth chart)

Depending on who you ask he's ahead of Ellis and waaay ahead of Josi.

He's not way down, he's got a very, very good chance of making the team this year, probably better than Ellis does, actually.

There are so many great Swedish defenseman out there now. I like Larsson best of all but am impressed with Hedman as well.

NHL sources I know have more or less jumped up and down while talking about Ekholm. He's the real deal. I wouldn't say he's a "sleeper", he's a top-end defense prospect.

there are so many good dman and its impossible to say which non established player ie not Edler or Enstrom as they are well established and are considered great Swedish Dman will be the next one.

all i have to say is for 2014 Sweden will run 16dman and 4 forwards (centers) they will just have the forward chill at the opposing blue line while 4 dman pick apart the other team and make outstanding outlet passes its foolproof.

yeah can you imagine trying to be in that cast of management picking defenceman for Sweden come 2014, even 2018. Sweden have a very bright future.

Their blueline is the most promising one IMO and in national team games at short tournament's D is the most important thing including goalie.

Sweden has done an incredible job producing young defensemen but Canada's depth is unmatched, Schenn, Subban, Pietrangelo, Doughty and Myers are all born in '89 or '90 and are legitimate top pairing NHL defenseman already. Throw in guys like Weber and Keith who still have many years left in them the Swedes haven't quite caught up. The next generation includes guys like Murphy, Hamilton, Murray and Reinhart so more studs are on the way. Canada will always have the lockdown on best defensemen and centres for the foreseeable future.

yeah, your right couldn't realize that they're that young . Canada is sick at every position except they aren't best goalie developing IMO.

When I said way down I was including Weber, Suter, Klein ect. He's not going to get the ice time that some of the other players mentioned will at this stage of his career. That's what I intended. I don't think we'll see him making the team out of camp. The Preds will give him time in Milwaukee to adjust to NA 1st.

He has a clause to go back to Sweden if he doesn't make the big club. Another reason I think he has the inside track on Ellis or Josi.

That's not entirely true. If the Preds plan is to play him in Milwaukee all year, he'd rather play in Sweden, though, but it's not like they're not allowed to send him down.

These kids are so lucky (the ones playing in the NHL now as either rookies or just young players in general) because they get to play in the same league as someone who was surely their idol (Lidstrom).

We'll start to hear Ekholm's name mentioned a lot more when he starts playing for Nashville is Suter or Weber are gone. They know how to properly develop defenseman and they could mold Ekholm into something special.

I love all these people posting lists like the topic isn't singular.

The next great swedish defenseman is David Rundblad.
