Miikka Salomaki

Hey guys, Isles fan here! What's the scouting report on this young Finnish winger? Who's he comparable to, and were you guys happy about the pick? I wished the Isles drafted him instead of Johan Sundstrom, but I hope Sundstrom can make me regret typing that.

Sounds like another Trotz type of guy. Hard working, well-rounded, with a bit of sandpaper. He's said to be the best pick in the 2nd round.

Not sure who I would compare him to just yet. I'd have to see him play first personally to make that call.

Salomaki spent the majority of the season in the SM-Liiga and wasn’t out of place playing in Finland’s top men’s hockey league. He also had an impressive showing at the World Juniors as a 17-year-old and quickly established himself as a gritty player who was willing to sacrifice his body despite being a little undersized. Salomaki is a solid offensive contributor but when you factor in his grit and willingness to compete, he can certainly find a role at the next level with that combination.

A younger, smaller Erik Cole?

Yeah that was my mistake. It's Pihlstrom (or Pihlström if you're picky)

Ok, and is he going to play in the Finnish league again or will he make the transition to NA and play with Milwaukee? That is Nashville's AHL affiliate right?

Salomäki made a hat trick today in European Trophy vs Luleå (top4 team in SEL). All three goals was scored in front of the crease

I was following NHL.com's Adam Kimmelman's articles and twitter acct a few weeks back as he was watching some WJ exhibitions with US, Finland and Sweden. Salomaki centered the top line in all of Finland's games and said he was the most impressive Finn on the ice due to his solid play in all three zones (Pulkkinen also played, Michael Granlund did not). Finland didn't play so well as a squad but Salomaki stood out.

This guy could be a player.

Salomaki is playing on the top line for Karpat this season as well. Will definitely be a guy to keep tabs on throughout the year...

He's looked very promising so far in these pre-season games.

And the guy who looked after comparisons, he's Tuomo Ruutu lite. Very aggressive, incredibly strong for his age and size and quite good skater as well. He can score too but lacks high end playmaking skills. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in Nashville's 3rd line after two or three years. I'd say his upside is 2nd line role winger that can pot 25 goals or so.
