How can he do that? He's under contract with the B's for the 11-12 season I thought?

I guess it really just doesn't make any sense to draft Russians these days. It's a shame.

Uh oh, can we throw Koko back?

You do realize that each Russian, like each Canadian, American, Swede or Czech, is an individual?

Yeah, and? Besides crap prospects and useless can't hack it veterans that aren't Russian, who else flees to the KHL? Nobdoy except Russians seem to flee home regardless of contract...It's lame....Maybe he had a "can't hack it/homesick" defection clause.

Sure. Get rid of that worthless Datsyuk fellow and that lousy Ovechkin guy while you're at it.

And nobody has better waste a pick on that Yakupov kid next year.

Obviously I would have before the KHL existed, sorry I didn't have a crayon to spell it out.

As for Yakupov, I'm pretty sure the team that takes him first will already have him signed, although with Russians it doesn't seem to matter if they have a contract or not.

There are problems on the other side of this, too. According to SportBox (link: http://news.sportbox.ru/Vidy_sporta/...-resheniem-KHL), the GM of Severstal is saying Alexandrov's KHL rights were still owned by Severstal Cherepovets, the team he'd previously played for before coming to Providence. He disagrees with the result of the KHL hearing held on August 23rd that declared Alexandrov to be a free agent. Consequently, he believes his signing with SKA violates league rules. The GM stated Alexandrov returned to Cherepovets at the end of last season and trained with the team, claiming he would return if things didn't work out in Providence. Hmmmm. At least this is what my middling Russian tells me!

And per the SKA press release, it's a two-year deal.

That's all well and good that the KHL teams are fighting over him, but he's under contract with the Bruins for next season. That trumps everything else.

Did the NHL and KHL just have some sort of handshake agreement recently that said they would respect the other league's active/outstanding contracts? And then this happens?

Well Yuri, it's gonna be wicked awkward when you're forced to play here next season, but you've shown your true colors. That's fine though, we're always better off without players who don't want to be here.

And what about Chudinov? We drafted that kid basically because he was Yuri's buddy, and now Yuri's going back to Russia. Guess we can write off ol' Maxim as well. At least he was only a 7th rounder. If this happens with Khoklachev then I'll be really angry.

I am fully behind just flat out not drafting Russian players anymore, save for the obvious exceptions like Yakupov.

Well that just sucks... Maybe he felt as if there was too much "D" depth on the Bruins/P-Bruins roster.

Alexandrov didn't possess NHL talent. Hell, he was borderline AHL-quality. No possibility of him ever making the big squad, or any other big squad, sorry to say.

KHL or Europe is the perfect place for him. Good luck to Yuri going forward

Good effing riddance. I love the Russians' skills in hockey... but dude GTFO . You don't want to be here, you're probably not good enough either. Everyone really hyped him up, but I never understood it to be honest. His stats were only mediocre in the KHL, and that's not saying much even if it is almost at the NHL's level...

No need for the condescension at all.

Who was the last non-Russian player who was under contract with an NHL team and defected to the KHL?

Alexandrov is indeed under contract to the Bruins for next season, I thought we had some agreement to respect eachothers contracts?

Maybe he never committed to learning English and wanted things handed to him like so many Russian players.

I tried for a long time to spin Alexandrov as a potential player, but he was just like the vast, VAST majority of other Russians that are just defectors-in-waiting.

Defected? What is this, 1965?

There are many North American players in the KHL. It's an option, like any other country that has pro hockey, one that can be more lucrative than, say Sweden or Switzerland.

I'm not going to condemn Alexandrov, because I know little of his personal situation. I do know he's married; it's possible his wife had a hard time here. He made very little in the AHL and no doubt was offered a lot more in the KHL. I do know what it's like to live in a strange environment as I've lived in Europe. It's difficult.

I wouldn't be surprised if Chiarelli ok'd the deal.

He realizes the logjam at D in Providence, and probably also realizes that Alexandrov wasn't going to develop into an NHL player.
