Snow still looking for top 4 d-man; training camp invite turned down

This article talks about how four NHL pro scouts say the Isles will compete this year.
http://www.islanderspointblank.com/2...the-standings/

The interesting thing about this article is this:
Quote:
With a key roster upgrade or two, they certainly could. Looking in awe at the Islanders’ cap space, the scouts know general manager Garth Snow has the cap flexibility, resources and assets to add a key player when needed.

“Snowy is not done,” said one scout. “I know he tried all summer to add a dman, but the (Christian) Ehrhoff thing went bust because they wouldn’t give him a blank check up front and he hasn’t been able to connect on another deal like he did with Wisniewski last summer. There’s still time left. Good players will be available during camp in trades and on the wire. A quality player that an Edmonton might not want to spend for could be snapped up by Snowy.”

Said another, “I know for a fact that Garth offered a training camp invite this month to a pretty good veteran, but he turned it down for now. To me, that’s a sign Garth is trying to do whatever he can within his limitations. He has to know he needs more if he really wants his team to finally make a big splash this season. It’s good for business and it’s good for arena negotiations.”
Who do you think Garth is targeting that could be so good? Who do you think he invited to camp?
Discuss....

I agree with CB, McCabe makes sense. He also makes it seem that McCabe will accept the invite once it becomes clear that training camp will start and he won't have any NHL contracts offered.

Yep...McCabe likely the guy. And Snow doesn't want to give him a contract until better options via trade have been exhausted.

1. When he actually gets a top 4 dman let me know.
2. He could not even convince the player to come to camp.

I would love McCabe, he would fit perfectly on the PP with Streit

It's probably McCabe, and I would be fine with him on a one year deal.

Doesn't seem that crazy. Players would prefer a contract before committing to a training camp.

Ugh.. Not interested in bringing back McCabe... He looked like he ran out of gas last season.

Why is it sad? Makes sense to wait until the last minute if his agent thinks there is a contract somewhere to be had in the next couple of weeks.

Exactly hes in no rush to accept any invites he's still banking on someone offering him a contract which could still happen when some people get hurt in camp or training ex: mottau last year with us.

McCabe would be an upgrade for our current team. He's not the player he once was-but he's def. better than Jurcina/Mottau/etc.

Not the perfect solution, but is a good option.

McCabe is not an answer. He is a stop gap and not worth a moment of my time in discussion, honestly.

If the club can't bring anyone worthwhile back in trade that is kind of scary. Does it mean everyone is asking for the sky, or does it mean they are still low balling?

If no one wants to come here, how long before the good prospects want to leave?

I know no one has probably thought of this, and I feel kind of silly even mentioning the possibility, but how about McCabe?

Obviously whoever he invited is no superstar and he probably looked at our depth chart and realized he probably couldn't make the team

Any trade for a legit top-4 defensemen, is going to cost us-and quite frankly who do you think the Isles should move for a legit top-4? Anybody worth that type of return, is going to leave more of a hole in our roster than they create.

It's not ideal to take a player like McCabe, and it may be a "stop-gap". But those gaps need to be filled out, especially if this team is going to be competing for the playoffs. It would be short term, wouldn't take a spot away from anybody better, or a young player, and we have TONS of cap space. Low risk, high reward.

We also can't bank on Streit being as effective on the PP as he was the other couple years with us. He's missed a whole NHL season-that's a BIG deal. Especially for someone who's 33. Any relief for him on the PP (and McCabe adds that better than anybody else on our roster), would improve the team.

Blake Comeau. Rolston replaces him. Haley replaces Hunter.

Not sure if Blake Comeau alone would bring in a legit top-4 though. What player(s) specifically do you think Comeau could bring in? I just don't see it. I think Comeau could be a piece in a trade-but we'd have to give up more.

when we traded for the wiz we gave up what 3rd round pick?... He was anaheims second leading scoring defenseman the last year he played there with 30 points. Second to Niedermayer.... Blake Comeau is a forward who has finally come into his own and notched some decent numbers since he's got a chance to play a full year. Comeau could fetch more then people think if we can find the right team to make a trade with.

McCabe and Streit could be really dangerous together on the pwp.

Even so--McCabe is no longer a top 4 defenseman. Whatever speed he used to have is gone now. He's got to be one of the slowest dmen in the league.

I'd rather have Rolston at the point. His slapshot is soooooo underrated. Even at age, he can just fire the puck from long range at a blazing velocity
