Yahoo Fantasy Mock Drafts and Pre-Season Talk

Just did a mock trying to prepare for my league (12 team keeper H2H with standard stats with +/-, Hits, BLK, FW, SAV). How do you think this team will do with these settings? I picked 7th overall.

1. Henrik Lundqvist (NYR - G)
2. Jonathan Toews (Chi - C)
3. Henrik Zetterberg (Det - LW)
4. Claude Giroux (Phi - RW)
5. David Backes (StL - RW)
6. Cam Ward (Car - G)
7. Ryane Clowe (SJ - LW)
8. Tobias Enstrom (Wpg - D)
9. Semyon Varlamov (Col - G)
10. Erik Johnson (Col - D)
11. Derek Roy (Buf - C)
12. Ryan Suter (Nsh - D)
13. Jamie Benn (Dal - LW)
14. James van Riemsdyk (Phi - LW)
15. Victor Hedman (TB - D)
16. Steve Downie (TB - RW

I'm pretty happy with my forwards and goalies...defence is definitely a weak point. Any suggestions as to which picks/rounds I should target a d-man to get good value?

There are some interesting picks at the bottom of the list...Hemsky ranked at 300+, Okposo and Alfredsson down at 200+, Benn/Kulemin/Van Riemsdyk bunched together at around 160. For those who have done some mocks, do you find that these guys are getting sniped way earlier than they're ranked, or underdrafted, etc? Any other sleepers that are hidden way down there?

Post your own!

Ya, you rocked that draft. Seriously. Absolute dynamite. You got really good value all around and I don't see a single reach.

Question though, I assume that yahoo is obviously working for you? Were you having trouble earlier?

Before I couldn't do mock drafts, now I cannot even sign into my yahoo fantasy account...

Your real league may be a keeper, but your mock was not. It's easy to stock up on high potential young players when you are playing a different game than everyone else.

I was having trouble earlier, but I assume it's all good now.

Powdered Toast: absolutely, I don't expect to replicate this draft at all in any sort of competitive keeper. I don't think Giroux will last to 4th, for example. But I guess I was hoping for some talk on overall strategy, like whether to take Lundqvist with the 7th or wait for goalies, whether to try to get some defensemen earlier, players to look out for/avoid in such a format, etc.

I'm a Ducks fan too, but that seems early for Hiller, considering his vertigo and everything. Otherwise I like it. Getzlaf being ranked so low is great, Bobby Ryan being ranked 10th sucks.

I didn't have a starter and everyone went goalie crazy round 2. The guy below me hinted that he was taking Jonas. Pavelec is a decent backup. He's pretty underrated.

Getzlaf being ranked so low is a huge advantage IMO for Perry owners (I like getting double the value for a single goal). Like the mock, but I agree, Hiller might have been a reach at the 4th round. However, I feel that this year goalies are ranked higher than they should (4 in the top 18 means that there's gonna be a lot of reaches to make sure you get a decent one), with the exception of Ward (who I feel is really underrated with a rank of 73), so I guess you can only really wing it on draft day and go with the flow. Same with Burrows...he's ranked around 80 I think?, but I don't think he'll go that low.

Yeah, if everyone went nuts on goalies, round 4 is good for Jonas.

One thing I noticed so far this season is that Malkin usually falls low so he's a great sleeper pick of sorts. Another thing I noticed is that there's a plethora of good goaltending out there. Best not to pick your goalies too early, but not too late either. Really depends on when the so-called "goalie rush" starts in your draft. In this draft the goalie rush started at about the second round.

I always pick d-men last, save for the Mike Green and Drew Doughty types (who always go way too early anyways) because forwards produce a lot more then d-men. Simple as that. So unless your league has a weighted points system to give d-men an advantage or something it's not worth drafting d-men early or even before forwards in general I think.

However, with that said, Wisniewski, Zidlicky, Timonen, and Carle are all good d-men capable of 40+that I notice go pretty late. Especially Zidlicky.

I don't like that you drafted d-men first, but Benn and Roy were great late steals. Roy is always a sleeper pick that goes unnoticed though for some reason. The guy has PPG potential and he usually goes late. Same goes for Ribeiro actually. So if you're looking for forward sleepers I'd go with those two.

I don't see Alfredsson as being a good pick. Hell, he's gone undrafted in every mock draft I've done. The guy is 38 going on 39, on possibly the worst team in the league, and had a rather large decrease in scoring last season.

I don't get the Hedman pick. He's not a big point producer and as far as I know he's not projected to be one. If there were no high quality d-men left then I can understand it I guess.

I don't get the Burrows pick. He's a 50 to 60 point forward and yet you drafted him before the likes of Eriksson and Stastny. I'm extremely wary of older players so I don't like Selanne going so high. That's probably just my bias against older players speaking though. I love the Setoguchi pick. I don't get the Lydman and Bogosion picks. Were there no quality d-men available or something? I also don't know if you meant to do this or what, but literally a third of your team is Ducks players. Probably not a good idea to have a third of your roster dependent on one team, even if it's a good team like the Ducks.

I like taking three goalies so it bothers me that you only took two and that one of them is Reimer. Other then that though you did fine.

Garbage: those last round picks of D-men are good value (though I guess if you boil it down I just don't plain trust Carle and Zidlicky for some reason, even though it's practically zero risk and you'll have room to pick up a breakout D-man), but for non-standard leagues such as the one I'm gonna be taking part in, it might not work...the inclusion of Hits and Blocks are gonna emphasize workhorse defensemen rather than pure offensive guys (though I think I underrate Timonen due to age and should keep an eye out).

I agree with the philosophy of letting the other guys overpay for D-men that are only marginally better than what you could get much later though.

I don't get the Lydman and Bogosion picks. Were there no quality d-men available or something? I also don't know if you meant to do this or what, but literally a third of your team is Ducks players. Probably not a good idea to have a third of your roster dependent on one team, even if it's a good team like the Ducks.

1.) The LW pool is super weak, he was honestly the best available at that position.
2.) Teemu didn't go all that high in fairness. This was a 14 team draft. He was 8th in points last year.
3.) Yeah I couldn't believe Seto was still on the board.
4.) With Lydman, he was second in the league in +/- which is a whole stat category so that's useful...Bogo...yeah. I didn't want Liles.
5.) Yeah I really didn't intend to do that. Ryan is ranked 10th and Getzlaf like 34, and even though I love Bobby more, if he was available at 2 I'd still go with Getz. Lydman I knew about his +/- stat. Hiller, though a risk was one of the best guys available. And Perry...well I'll take the Hart winner any day of the week.
