Both Salomaki (5 goals in 6 games) and Patrick Cehlin (2g, 4a in 6 games) lead their respective teams in scoring at the European Trophy tournament.

Magnus Hellberg has found his groove and was absolutely outstanding today in a 4-1-win against Färjestad, the final game of the group stage in the European Trophy tournament. You're spoling yourself with goaltending talent, Hellberg is an absolute treat to watch (you know, if you're into modern, "boring", goaltending).

Article on Preds 2011 4th rounder Josh Shalla: http://www.mlive.com/spirit/index.ss...ossibilit.html

Quote:
While the Saginaw Spirit continue to make decisions on who will make their roster this season, it’s the Nashville Predators who will be making one of the biggest preseason decision regarding the Spirit’s roster: Whether to return Predators draft pick Josh Shalla to Saginaw for a third season, or assign him to their American Hockey League affiliate in Milwaukee.

And from what the team has told Shalla, it could go either way.

“They asked me where I wanted to play, and I said I want to make Milwaukee this year,” Shalla said. “They said, ‘Come back to camp, and if you prove yourself, you’ll be playing there.’ It’s kind of up in the air, I guess.”

I followed Joe Champagne closely last season with the Quebec City Remparts and you guys put your hands on a player with a lot of upsides. He has skills, size, a great shot but his skating has to improve. Not that he is extremly slow but as most of the big guys, his feet are not quick enough yet. He went under the radar of several NHL organizations since the Quebec Junior Major League is underscouted and has been for couple of years now. He is not the typical talent usually drafted from the «Q» anyway. This league usually produces kind of small, fast, high skilled, goal scorer type of fowards a la Daniel Briere or Claude Giroux.

Roussel and Bourque also are players that I liked a lot when I saw them play in the past years. I know Bourque had a good rookie season with the Ad's in Milwaukee and I wouldn't be suprised he plays couple of games this season in Nashville. To me he's a younger Mike Fisher. For Roussel, his numbers were not what people expected last year. After a 50+ points season in Shawinigan, he was traded to the full house Montreal Junior team and his production drops. I saw him played several games last season since the Montreal Junior was often on TV (thanks to the Habs first pick: Louis Leblanc) and I didn't understand why Roussel was not used on the PP. I think he will benefit a season or two in Milwaukee.

The smoke coming from Ekholm is like a fire now. he's been placed on the Predator's roster on the official site and he was the best defenseman in arguably the 2nd best league in the world. (Per the 303:30).

To me it's Hillen, Bouillon, Laakso, Josi, Ekholm, and Ellis fighting for Nashville roster spots.

So if Ekholm doesnt make it he goes back overseas for another year right? If thats the case maybe management wants to keep him here and let Ellis get time in the AHL regardless who has a better camp/preseason. Cause if he does go back thats 1 less dman that could fill a spot for injuries.

He has the option to go back, but it is not believed he does so if he's close to legitimately playing in the NHL this season. It is not automatic...

I think when they built that provision into his contract, they were basically acknowledging that the spot was mostly his to lose. I'd be surprised if Ellis or even Josi makes it over Ekholm.

I think Muller said that he was taking a little time to adjust to the North American ice. His comment came on the heels of lots of praise for Ellis. I inferred that Ellis was a step ahead of Ekholm because he's not yet accustomed to a larger playing surface.

Don't you mean smaller playing surface?

Yes, thanks for the correction. I wonder about Muller's comments when compared to the pundits who rank Ekholm higher than our other prospects. Maybe I read too much into his praise for Ellis. I place more credence in the comments of a coach evaluating his players than an industry scout who sees a 2 minute film clip and a stat sheet.

Had to love EJ Hradek's tweet in regard to Craig Smith, today. Essentially said that he had just gotten off the phone with an unnamed, but well-reputed, Stanley Cup winning "hockey guy" that called Craig Smith the "real deal."

Brian Burke's involvement with Team USA made me wonder if it was him.

Okey SM-liiga (finnish elite league) has started and Miikka Salomäki's team Kärpät has started the season with two wins (4-1, 2-3). Salomäki has taken huge steps forward in this summer. If he keeps developing the way he has it's no doubt that he will play in NHL and it will be within few years.

Salomäki plays in Kärpät's top line with czech players Ivan Huml and Michal Vondrka. It should be very good line for Salomäki to develop. You wouldn't guess that Salomäki is only 18 when you look him at the ice. Already physical player and keeps going to the net with skill and strength. He will be very important player for his team if keeps playing like he has.

One goal only so far in these two games but there will be a lot more when the season ends.
