The habs are far from screwed. They are looking very bright. The only thing that bothers me is the possibilty of our prospects not panning out on offense, since oour defensive prospects are very bright. Its our offense that we may have to bring in UFA.

2014 gives the team LOTS of options. Yes they will have high end guys to replace, but there's no reason to think that this will be a bad thing.

Not a big fan of leaving as much money on the table as there is right now when the opportunity was there to spend it.

Worry about next year, next year. Gauthier said himself if cap space is needed there are ways to get it. I think he's taken that too far. LOL

Only thing I know for sure is that cap space can't score, hit or defend.

Who do you feel the Habs should have gone after? I think they should (if they need to) be able to pick up a very solid d-man throughout the season for a much less than premium price.

I think there wasn't any logical way to spend that cap space that would assure a better team.

Plus, cap space leftover leaves us with the possibility of scoring a powerful depth rental if the season goes well.

Really? Subban at $3.75M and Price at $5.25M? Are we using Spacek and AK46 money to raise these two alone?

I knew these two were the most expensive to re-sign, though.

Gauthier did go after a d-man but didn't get him signed. Don't think it would have had to have been a premium price. He settled for another 5th, 6th, 7th d-man. The Habs are well stocked in that category. No complaints there.

Wizniewski? All the best to him but he isn't worth 5.5 per year. Certainly not on the Habs, unless it was a 1 year deal.

Considering the room they have it might have been smart to offer Hamrlik and overpayment (say 4.5 for the year, big enough that even if he signs a small contract elsewhere next season he's made as much as he would getting 3.5 over for two) for a single season to keep him considering how much spare cap space Montreal has. But as Gill formed such an effective pairing with Subban and Yemelin was finally coming over it was probably time to go with youth. The ideal scenario would be to sign Hamrlik for a year and dump Spacek somewhere (he's underated here but isn't the player Hammer is) but that wasn't all that realistic.

Cap room is important, but it's no substitute for developing your own talent.
