Rick Jeanneret to the Sabres Hall

per sabres.com, Rick Jeanneret and Dale Hawerchuk will be inducted into the Sabres Hall of Fame in November.

Wonder what changed in Rick's thinking, to finally accept the invitation? (He certainly has been asked in the past, you would think. I mean, just look at the members inducted ahead of him.)

Mods, please merge with the previous discussion. I couldn't immediately find it.

Possible it was made a condition of the reduced broadcast schedule.
TPegs / TBlack: "OK, you wanna work part-time, then you gotta go in the hall of fame."

Or maybe RJ didn't want to go in on Quinn's watch

If I remember right, he was waiting until he stopped broadcasting before actually accepting the invitation. Not sure why he changed his mind now, though.

Maybe only hall of famers and current Sabres players are allowed to sit next to the new fire place

Probably means this is gonna be his last year.

The Sabres better get their act together and win the Cup this year. What a tragedy it would be for RJ not to be able to make that call.

Great for RJ, but it's a different hall that they need to induct him into.

The HHOF will certainly come a calling for him when the time comes.

Glad Ducky's being added - he was one of my favorites despite his short tenure in Buffalo.

I would imagine it is his last year bit IIRC he has said before that if the Sabres make the finals after he retires and he is still physically/mentally able to announce he would announce the finals providing the new play by play guy was willing (which who wouldn't be)

I think his friends talked him into getting it done while he's still healthy enough to enjoy it.

Not to belabor my point, but I believe that hall has already called.

Why would Mike Lange of Pittsburgh and Chuck Kaiton of Carolina, among others of Rick's contemporaries, be so honored, but not Rick?

The pair will officially be inducted as the 36th and 37th members of the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame during a ceremony before the teamís game against the Winnipeg Jets on November 8.

Glad they're doing it when the Jets come in - it'll be interesting to hear Hawerchuk's comments because he was 100% in favor of the NHL returning to Winnipeg.

There are 32 broadcasters presently honored under the Foster Hewitt category in the HHoF - and I know at least 9 of them (Bob Cole, Mike Emrick, Chuck Kaiton, Bob Miller, Mike Lange, Rod Phillips, Peter Maher, Jiggs McDonald, Mickey Redmond) are still actively working for teams.

One can only assume that RJ's exclusion from HHoF is at his own request...

This, unfortunately, was my immediate thought as well. I (sadly) figure he'll be at the end of his time, if it hasn't already passed, when he's inducted into the HHOF.

Makes me happy I grabbled that game in my mini-pack.

No Hasek? I like both those guys, but Hasek should have been inducted awhile ago.

Hasek and Stu Barnes please. Then Drury and Briere.

I guess this is slightly off-topic, but I didn't want to put it in the Belak RIP thread, or start a new thread.

My question is how these deaths might affect Rick's rock-em, sock-em style of calling fights and physical situations within games. I don't know Rick. I sure feel like I do, and I'd be surprised if he isn't a sensitive man of great heart.

I have to believe the events of this summer would naturally make him wonder if he's somehow contributed to the circus atmosphere that perhaps has led to people being hurt.

I honestly don't know how he can go on calling fights the same way. Then again, I honestly don't know how fans can go on cheering fights, and I know they will.

It just seems like these deaths should be real game-changers for the sport, the fans, the broadcasters. Who can have the stomach for fighting anymore?

I would hope if we made it to the finals after RJ's broadcasting time, we would bring him back to call them. It would just sound wrong to have someone like Kevin Sylvester calling it.

I was thinking that, too. It would be nice to honor the guy like that, but it also gives the shaft to whoever is the current broadcast team. Maybe just bring him in as a third member of the booth so he can be there and comment as he feels like it.

If I was Sylvester (or any future Sabres broadcaster), and it was the SCF involving Buffalo, and RJ was not part of the contracted broadcast coverage, I would insist the opportunity be offered him.

Not an issue for this year, however, as RJ will be there to call it all (as if another incentive was needed for the players).

I'm telling you right now, if RJ is in good health, and the Sabres make it to even the conference finals, he needs to come back for that. While it would be great for that the Sabres won the cup, months after, I would be sad that RJ didn't make the final call. It would be a tragedy to the Sabres universe and RJ himself.

I think Briere and Drury should definitely make it. They are like the LaFontaine and Mogilny of the 00's.
