Canucks invite G Manny Legace to Training Camp
Quote:
After spending last season in Germany after failing to win a job with the New York Islanders out of training camp, Legace is getting another chance to try and crack through with an NHL team. While it’s great news for Legace that he’s getting a tryout, the unfortunate part comes with which team he’s getting a shot with: Vancouver.

He was rather pedestrian in the DEL last season so I doubt he'll have much of an impact beyond being a warm body.

There is literally 0% chance he gets signed. We already have 4 goalies on contract.
I suppose he's there just in case of Climie being a disaster?

Luongo, Schneider for Kovalchuk, Parise = WIN
Legace as starter, Lack as backup.

Probably just to make sure Luongo gets an extended rest in the pre-season after the run. Split games between Legace and Lack and then one to Lu and one to Schneids or something.
Gives the guy a favor too, if he plays well behind a solid defense, he could maybe get a shot as a third stringer somewhere else. In case Schneider does get traded later on the year too, he could be the veteran backup that Gillis would then need to find, and this could be a way to introduce him to the system. Sign at league minimum (if he does well enough), loan to Europe until a Schneider trade comes along?
There are a lot of (marginal) possibilities here.

Anyone remember if MG invited a goalie on a tryout to last season's camp?

Wasn't Dan Cloutier offered an invite, but he ended up going to Detroit?

Best way to get a 2nd liner is to trade Schneider, probably. If you are gambling with Luongo then maybe it's time to go all-in.

Could be like the time where Dave Scatchard parlayed an invite to Canucks camp into a contract with the Preds.

To not overwork Luongo in Training Camp and the pre-season... I don't think he gets signed..
Unless one of Luongo or Schneider is getting traded

Former Canuck. I was at the 1999-2000 season-opener against the Rangers, when he was the back up to Kevin Weekes.
Good times.

is he a former gillis client? seems like a favour to help him score a deal with another team.
or maybe they want to send him to chicago to serve as lack's big brother?
i say hire manny fernandez as rollie's assistant and begin every game with an re-recording of ted dibiase's old theme song:

Like I posted in the Steve Begin thread...
This OBVIOUSLY means Schneider is being traded for Parise. I heard that Parise bought a house in West Vancouver.

Everybody knows it's not a done deal until he buys a BBQ as well.

Legace was with the Canucks back in the Burke era - for about two weeks.
He was claimed on waivers from the Wings on September 30, 1999 and then was re-claimed by the Wings on October 13, 1999. Legace would win a Stanley Cup in 2002 with the Wings.
The Burkie inspired long-running program... "The Goalie Wheel of Misfortune" that season included:
Garth Snow - 32 games
Kevin Weekes - 20 games
Felix Potvin - 34 games
Corey Schwab - 6 games
Alfie Michaud - 2 games

I can't see management trading Schneider after what happened with Luongo in the playoffs. Never say never, of course, but...
Anyway, que sera, sera.
