And let's be honest, the guy went to the Mario Lemieux school of retirement.

My thoughts exactly. Very few players left from the first few years I followed hockey (around '93-94).

Sad to see Kariya and Foppa retire. Both could have been top 20 players of all time if injuries hadn't cut their careers short.

No, he didn't. He signed with Ingolstadt of Germany after being released by the Canucks and had 15 points in 15 games. He left Ingolstadt at the end of the year and was rumored to be signing with Orebro of Sweden but nothing came of it. He has not retired yet.

Neither of these two have retired yet. In fact, Clark has been invited to the Bruins training camp.

A couple of guys who did not play in the NHL in 2010-11, but have NHL experience and have retired but I didn't see mentioned in thread.

-Jesse Boulerice (Announced by his wife on Facebook!)
-Chris Taylor (Became development coach with Rochester of the AHL)
-Jay McKee (Became assistant coach with Rochester of the AHL)
-Nils Ekman (Suffered a stroke last year and has been told he will be unable to continue his career)
-Dan Cloutier (Don't know if it was ever formally announced but he's the goalie coach with Barrie)
-Jason Ward (Assistant Coach with Brampton)
-Scott Walker (Head Coach of Guelph)
-Jimmy Waite (Believe or not, was STILL playing over in Germany until this past year)

Wow, that list is kind of crazy.

In NHL Faceoff '97 me and my two cousins each picked a team and played through a season, and on my team (which was knocked out in game 7 triple overtime of the SC Finals against one of my other cousins and his Buffalo Sabres)

I had Recchi, Marchant, Forsberg and Osgood! My whole nucleus from that team just retired, so I'll raise a pint to those guys tonight!

some one should make a list of players that played before 95-96 and are still active

Active players with debuts PRIOR to, and not including 1995-96:

Modano, Selanne, Lidstrom, Ray Whitney, Arnott, Smyth, Rolston, Stillman, Gonchar, Hamrlik, O'Donnell, Pronger, Rob Niedermayer, Kovalev (KHL), Langenbrunner, Aucoin, Rivet, Brodeur, and Khabibulin

There may be more, but that's who I came up with.

Jagr is another. Nylander (if he gets a contract. Know he had a tryout) Guys like Koivu, Bertuzzi and Jovanovski started in 95-96. We are running out of players from my childhood.

Jozef Stumpel, Sergei Fedorov and Sandis Ozolinsh are still playing.

Jeff Shantz, Mike Craig and Dominik Hasek played last year and are currently free agents.

Rob Niedermayer will play for Lugano (Switz.) next year.
Modano, Sillman and Rivet are still without a contract. Selanne too but it's all but confirm that he will return to Anaheim for another year.
Nylander is on a try-out with Philadelphia, Nolan is on a try-out with Vancouver.
You can add Ian Lapperiere who's still under contract for another year but who might never play another game in his career.
And that's it!

If you add 1995-96:
Doan, Dvorak, Alfredsson, Brunette, Bertuzzi, Jovanovski, Langkow, Elias, Koivu, Moreau, Sullivan, Theodore, Nichol, Biron and Baumgartner (Vancouver - even if has'nt played in the nhl for years, he has a 2-way contract). McCabe, Staios and Strudwick are still without a contract.
