Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren was in a serious bike accident Monday in Avalon, N.J.

Sources said Holmgren, 55, was riding a bicycle and suffered broken ribs, a broken shoulder, and other injuries that required stitches. He was taken to Cooper Medical Center.

On Monday morning, Holmgren, through a Flyers spokesperson, said he was "sore, but in otherwise good spirits."

According to one officer at the Avalon police department, there were no details of how the accident occurred in the initial report filed with them.

Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk tweeted that Holmgren was wearing a helmet.

He remains hospitalized at Cooper University Hospital. Flyers officals said late Monday night they hoped to have more information on Tuesday. Holmgren is expected to recover from his injuries, they said.

A spokesman for Cooper Hospital said Monday night that Holmgren was in "stable" condition.

AVALON Paul Holmgren, the general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, was hurt in a bicycle accident in Avalon Monday.

He was taken to Cape Regional Medical Center, according to reports, and was later admitted to Cooper Hospital in Camden.

Avalon Police were called to the scene of a bicycle accident on Monday, Sept. 5, at 11:28 a.m.

According to police, Holmgren, 55, of Somerdale, was riding his bicycle north on Dune Drive at 58th Street when he lost his balance and fell off. No other vehicles, bicycles, or pedestrians were involved in the accident, police said.

Avalon police say Holmgren suffered a cut to the right side of his head and a shin abrasion, and was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House, by the Avalon Rescue Squad. He was conscious and alert at the time of the accident and told police that he lost his balance while on his bicycle.

Holmgren was wearing a helmet at the time.

Hope he's okay.

As much hate as he gets around here, Holmgren is a lifelong Flyer and a big factor in why the team is where it is today.

Oh hell. Here's hoping it's just superficial damage, and nothing worse than that.

Odd. Hopefully he's okay. I'm assuming bike like bicycle, not like a motorcycle right?

Here's hoping that he is OK and his injuries are just superficial. I still remember the interview when we played the north stars after he was traded there. You could see how emotional he was. People can say what they want about him, but the man is a Flyer through and through. Paul get well.

Hope Homer is alright. Carle was saying on Twitter it was a bicycle. He said he fears it when he goes dirt biking in the offseason. I hope it's nothing more serious than a few broken ribs.

Back in 75 me and a buddie went out and brought 10 speed Fugi's. We went tooling around and ended up on a hill in Pitman. Let me tell you I busted my ass trying to turn and looking back on it now it was a wonder I did not get killed. You never know.

You say, "of course, bicycle." but I was wondering myself since they never went into it and 'serious bike accident' does have the ring of motorcycle accident -- often hear motorcycles called bikes.

In any case, I'm hearing broken ribs, shoulder, stitches and other injuries so it doesn't' appears too serious; thank goodness.

... CSN just now reporting bicycle and that he will be okay. Great to hear it put like that.

Get well, Homer.

Yeah, I'm serious. Just because I think he makes questionable decisions doesn't mean I want him to be physically harmed.

Broken ribs and shoulder isn't exactly superficial. Ow.

Any word on his lungs?

No report about any other vehicle involved -- is a bike a vehicle? -- but Panotch is saying that details are sketchy at this time, even for the Flyers people.

I hear it happened in Avalon... I wasn't aware of a Cooper's down there?
