What kind of GM doesn't know how to ride a bike?

I'm just kidding (not really) Is it bad that I'm secretly hoping he hit his head and suddenly realizes that signing Shelly was a dumb idea and decides to trade him to the next GM that falls off his bike...preferably Shero?...

I'm kidding! I'm kidding; hope he gets better

I think as long as Holmgren isn't bedridden, he'll keep on GMing. This won't be sidelining him.
Maybe Jay Snider will come back from exile and take over while Holmgren recovers for 12-16 weeks. Atleast enough time to trade away the team and install all that great talent he saw while he was the Flyers Far East lead scout in Malaysia.

I'm confused by the posters in this thread.

From a lot of the comments I see around the boards normally, I'd expect most of you would have hoped it was serious enough that he couldn't return to work.

Anyway, he'll heal. He's a hockey player.

Update from the team: Holmgren says he is "sore" but will be OK.

Additional update with article from Philly.com:

Quote:
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren, who suffered broken bones in a bicycle accident Monday in Avalon, told a team spokesman on Tuesday that he was "sore but in good spirits."

Holmgren, 55, was wearing a helmet when he lost control of the bike.

He is being treated at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

It's one thing to hate the GM Holmgren for some of his moves. It's quite another thing to wish ill on the human being Holmgren.

Happened to me when I was 11 -> concussion and memory loss. Turned out going full speed and hitting just the front brake really is a bad idea.

This, of course, sheds new light on previous comments by Holmgren about navigating the salary cap being "like riding a bike." Apparently, when he came to after the accident, he sat bolt upright and yelled, "I signed Jody Shelley for HOW MUCH?"

There is also talk of Laviolette implementing a "Ride Island" policy.

Not sure if this was said, but I wonder if there was any booze involved? I have been involved in my fair share of Labor Day bike accidents. Though none as serious as this.

I doubt it, with Holmgren's status as a pretty vigilant recovering alcoholic, but of course I can't be 100% certain. I'd be very surprised if there was.

It was a morning incident, that likely reduces the probability. Police were on scene before 11:30 a.m.

UPDATE: Flyers general manager says he is "sore, but otherwise in good spirits," according to the Flyers' PR staff, after a bicycle accident Sunday that left him hospitalized.

Avalon police would not comment beyond confirming there was an accident.

According to the Flyers, via Comcast SportsNet's John Boruk, Holmgren was traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control of his bicycle.

EARLIER: Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren was listed in stable condition at Cooper Medical Center in Camden last night after a scary end to the Labor Day holiday.

Holmgren, 55, was injured in a serious bicycle accident on Monday while exercising

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren, who suffered multiple fractures in a bicycle accident on Monday in Avalon, N.J. apparently was knocked unconscious and awoke to people tending to him, according to scout Bill Barber.

Holmgren, 55, who lost his balance riding the bike, was wearing a helmet. No other vehicle was involved in the accident.

He remains in Cooper Medical Center with fractured ribs, a fractured shoulder and minor abrasions.

Flyers players and personnel visited him on Tuesday at the hospital.

“He’s in a lot of discomfort but he’s upright,” said scout Bill Barber. “It’s more upper body injuries than anything.
“He said he wasn’t sure what happened except he lost control [of the bike]. That was the end of it until he woke up and they [medical personnel] were cutting his clothing from him. Not sure whether that was at the scene or in the ambulance.”

The Avalon police report said that Holmgren was conscious and alert at the time of the accident.

Should we blame Leighton?

Until Leighton is no longer a Flyer or in the Philly area he must remain a suspect....

This was redacted by the Daily News BTW

"An anonymous witness (DrDoom) said a man with a beard and goalie pads was seen sticking a goalie stick in the spokes of the victim's bicycle and running off awkwardly in glee.."

I'm sure Carter drove down from Sea Isle and hit him with a wrister from distance.

Nah never mind, he'd miss high and wide.

The police should know better than to shoot from impossible angles.

When I was twelve or so I broke my collarbone while riding my bike. I wasn't going particularly fast, jumped off a curb and the front tire hit a large rock in the street. I spun out of control and smashed into a parked car.

Point being, for those wondering why his injuries are fairly significant, it doesn't take a lot to break bones. 10+ MPH & a parked car/pavement can do quite a bit of damage.
