Insane...RIP...

Was Demitra on the flight too? This is absolutely horrible.

I saw on twitter that it is apparently being looked at in a criminal investigation? I can't beleive it...

Yeah, Demitra was on the flight. Vasicek, Rachunek, and Skrastins too.

The only survivor is apparently in surgery right now and has over 80% of his body covered in burns.

As for the criminal investigation, I'm not sure. The capacity was ~120, so that checks out. The plane could have had too much cargo or something, possibly.

This is all over the news on Russian Channels, Medvedev ordering companies to phase out old Soviet planes ... obviously there is no money there so I don't know what he is talking about.

Neurologists are now saying Galimov (the player-survivor) is unlikely to survive his injuries even after the surgery. Docs keep fighting

Apparently false, but not far from the truth.

Maybe somebody with something to gain from the teams downfall setup some kind of sabotage? I know this is like bordering on James Bond-esque kind of storyline but they said criminal investigation... can't be much else other than absolute negligence by airport/plane employees...

RIP to everyone involved

This has been a sad summer for hockey in general

Young Urychev and Sobchenko who won the recent WJHC were also on board

Sobchenko had 7 points in 7 games in the WJC last year. Sharks prospect.

Urychev had 4 points in 7 games. Not sure if he was drafted.

This is just...horrible, horrible news.

Let's not forget Karpovtsev and Korolev, in their coaching staff, who have both been successful NHLers with almost 1400 career games combined.

RIP

I get uncomfortable in planes. I find them safe but just a little uncomfortable. Irrelevant and don't mean to derail, just first thing I thought about after the obvious RIP. Very sad news, no doubt about it. Whatever the cause, it doesn't change the fact these guys passed away. I find it even worse that some of the guys were near retirement. Others apparently hadn't even started their careers.

Totally horrible news.

It will also put a shadow on the Russian players playing in the NHL, as well as all the pro hockey players - and sport's organisations that are flying zillions of miles each season.

Wasn't Sobchenko at the Sharks training camp just a few days ago?

I think there was just an article posted on HF a day or two ago, as well.

One of my favorite swedish goalies Stefan Liv, who played in Adirondack a few years ago, is also confirmed dead.
