Happened to a Rugby team too, movie called "Alive", crashed in snowy mountains. Recommend the movie.

May Almighty God bless all the souls that were on that plane... Sad, sad, news today, my mind is going back to some of those guys, and the memories of watching them play the game we all love.

Stunned and incredibly sad. Can you imagine? Reading in Twitter that a Lokomativ official said "The team is gone"...wow....As far as the ex-NHL players in it, used to be a big fan of Demitra. Sad to the see the kids in there as well....pretty clear memory of Ostapchuck with Rouyn.

Like everybody has said....this summer can't end soon enough...

It makes me shudder in horror. I feel for the hockey players and crew members on that flight. Every professional sports team travels by air but it's particularly risky in Russia, where safety margins are lower. The quality of Russian airliners is lower than those of the rest of Europe as well as that of the US, Canada, and Brazil, and the maintenance is poorer. I've flown on Aeroflot and I was a bit apprehensive.

That's standard procedure in most plane crashes. From eyewitness reports it sounds like mechanical failure either related to the engines or steering.

Very sad news

its just not the way anyone should end their lives.

On a side note, can people stop going to russia for hockey? Between terrible medical staffs, bribery, mafia, bankrupt teams, you have to worry about getting on a plane?

Take a salary cut & come back to the NHL.

I heard it that the plane hit a radio mast after taking off.

BTW, I heard that Salei was not on the plane. He was apparently waiting for his team in Minsk. Conflicting reports about him though.

Alexander Galimov also survived (the only player that did) but he's in "beyond critical condition". Last update:

SlavaMalamud Slava Malamud
Doctor: "Galimov is alive and will be alive short-term, at least. His condition extremely critical. Had several surgeries" (Sport-Express)

My condolences to the families. Demitra was one of my favorite players.

This must be the first time a whole team gets decimated in a accident such as this one.

I wonder if Kovalev is having second thoughts about playing in the KHL.

Apparently this plane wasn't fit to fly, or at least it was supposed to be out of commission within the year. Just terrible news, condolences to the family.
