Where would you rank John Tortorella

Pretty simple question...among the 30 coaches currently employed in the NHL, where would Torts rank for you. (poll coming)

15th or so, not in the elite group of coaches but far from the worst.

i know its fashionable to beat up on coaches, ive been guilty of it in the past as well with my hate of Renney, but id rank Torts top 3 behind Bylsma and Trotz

I would say 3-5, because on any given year there are always 1-2 standouts.

But as you said Bylsma is up there, as well as Trotz.

I would throw Babcock up there, and maybe even Laviolette and AV.

I know some of those coaches have stacked rosters but they are also really good coaches that can get a lot of out lesser players.

I think Torts is definitely Top 5 though.

Let's not forget Ruff, either.

I voted 5-10, but now I really think it's more like 3-5, behind Bylsma, Babcock, and Ruff.

Definite top-10. 5-10.

Bylsma, Ruff and Trotz are probably top-3 for me.

I mistakenly voted 20-30 when I meant to vote for Top 3.

5 to 10 because of his panic with the lines and failure to have set line up and lines.

even Tubby is a pretty good coach to be honest, pissed me off that he was talking smack, but a pretty good coach non-the-less

He's a terrible coach, he's mean to the media.

Seriously, at least top 10 if not top 5.

I think he is 6-10. At this point, until he wins another Cup, I think he is solidly in that grouping.

The only coaches I would rather have on THIS team though are Ruff, Bylsma and Babcock.

Coaches I think are objectively better than Torts (not taking into account what kind of team they have to work with).

Babcock
Trotz
Bylsma
Laviolette
Ruff
Joel Quenneville

Torts can be a top 10 coach, on a good day. Last season, I thought he tempered his attitude problem pretty well and did a good job. Prior to that, he was certainly outside the top 10.

Calling him a top 3 or even a top 5 coach in the entire NHL is a huge stretch. This is still a guy with the following Rangers resume:

Year 1: First round loss, in which he managed to get himself suspended for going after a fan with a lead in the series.

Year 2: DNQ for playoffs

Year 3: Backed into playoffs the final day of the season, 1st round loss in 5 games.

Sure, the Rangers are a unique situation, but Torts lack of tactical prowess is what will always hold him back from being an elite coach. Hes a motivator, not a tactician - the great coaches are both.

Very true, but I don't think there are more than a handful of coaches who are both. I'd say my list above is pretty exhaustive of coaches who fit into that category.

good point.

it will be interesting to see with an established no1 center in BR whether we see as much line juggling.

Did he juggle lines this much in Tampa? Can anyone remember?

He's no Tom Renney...

Nah, but for real - I voted top 5-10. He gets a lot of crap from us, but he's a Stanley Cup winner & despite his constant line-shuffling, he knows how to build a team and stick with it. It's nice to finally have an identity and have it recognized by fans of other teams.

Yikes no way. He's a terrible coach when it counts. His regular season record may be impressive but all he has to do is babysit one of the most talented teams in the league. When the rubber hits the road come playoff time his flaws start to show. 24/7 was a good indication of how clueless he is.

Torts improved last year in my eyes due to the fact he kept his emotions in check a little better. Bylsma, Babcock and Trotz are ahead of him so somewhere in the 4-7 range.

On a 1-10 scale, 10 being the best, I rank him an 7.5 - 8.... I think this upcoming season will be the first season where he legitimately has the horses on the roster to field a very competitive team... Let's see what he can do this year...

Can someone here please give an example of WHY they think Bylsma and Trotz are good? I'm not saying they aren't, I'd just like a reason.

Bylsma took a Malkin and Crosby less Pens team and kept them winning. Trotz didn't have much to work with either that team was basically the WC's equivalent to the Rangers on offense.

Look at Nashville's record over the last few years. They've made the playoffs in the extremely difficult Western Conference in 6 of the last 7 seasons, despite having a very sparse offensive lineup. And before people ask about wins, look at the teams they've been knocked out by: Wings, Sharks, Sharks, Wings (Cup champs), Hawks (Cup champs), Nucks.
