The Blues announced their captains and assistant captains last Friday. The Rangers usually don't make a big deal about the naming of the C.

David Backes was named the captain and four A's

Quote:
The team also announced the appointment of defenseman Barret Jackman and forwards Jamie Langenbrunner, Andy McDonald and Alex Steen as alternate captains.

The Blues made a big media event out of it.

Mike Keenan had 4 A's. Brian Leetch,Kevin Lowe,Adam Graves and Steve Larmer. Alternated home and away games.

I am little surprised that this announcement is coming this early in the season. I figured the Rangers would really wait to see what happens with Richards to see how he meshes just to keep the option open. I was kind of hoping there was 3 "A's" (Callahan, Dubinsky, Richards/Staal) and maybe announce mid-season.

Is it definite this is going to be announced today?

Yes. It was announced on the Rangers Facebook page that they would announce it today.

This is how I see it.....

Callahan is a lock for Captain.

Richards will get one of the Alternate Captain posts. There has to be someone from that top line with a letter. Richards would be the obvious choice over Gaborik and Wolski/Dubinsky, given his history with Torts and track record of leadership.

Staal will get the other Alternate Captain spot. Our defensive corps needs someone with a letter, and Staal is the obvious choice given that he had an A last year.

The two locks in my opinion are Callahan and Staal. They both had letters last year, so they're not going to be stripped of them for no reason. Drury leaving opened up a slot, so I only really see one letter being in play. I think it will go to Richards, but I would honestly not be surprised to see it go to Girardi either. On merit alone, Girardi probably deserves a letter more than anyone else not named Callahan or Staal. The dude is a warrior night in and night out.

it's funny you should mention this movie. i was having a conversation about it last night lol

in all seriousness, i'm just repeating everyone. Cally gets the C, Dubi and Staal get A's with Richards possibly getting an A, if they go with 4 letters. Prust is a dark horse. don't recall who mentioned it on what page, but Prust definitely has a shot.

The Rangers website will have the announcement.

Quote:
The Rangers will name their new captain, along with two alternate captains, on Monday. The announcement will be made on the team's Facebook page, official Twitter (@thenyrangers), and two official web sites---newyorkrangers.com and BlueshirtsUnited.com. The 26th captain in franchise history will follow Chris Drury, who retired this summer after serving three seasons as captain of the Rangers.

I am going to be disappointed if dubi doesn't get the A over Richards. Dubi is a main part of our young core. This is cally,Staal, Henrik, and dubis team, not Richards team. Richards is a proven winner and shouldn't need to wear the A to validate anything.

by grabthar's hammer...what a smart ass!

I'm guessing:

Cally - C
Richards - A
Dubi - A

Why would Tortorella take the A from Staal?

He's not.

Richards getting a letter before even a formal skate with the coaching staff, let alone a shift in at least a pre-season exhibition game... would be ridiculous.

Callahan - C
Staal - A
Dubinsky - A

I pretty much agree with you, but could this be a clause in Richards' contract? Could he have demanded getting a letter to sign with NYR?
I dont know all that much about this, but that's something that I could imagine happening.
Also, did Richards have a letter when he was playing under Torts with the Lightning? If so, and if Torts see him as a leader, I am guessing that could influence the desicion aswell.

Me too. Makes me wonder if Torts is actually the one picking them, or if the players are doing it.

I always thought players decided who was captain and alternates, not coaches

Nope. Torts gave the A to Cally 2 years ago and then didn't assign a 2nd A until after the season started when he gave it to Prospal.

That's pretty much what I said a couple posts ago. I think Callahan and Staal are locks for 2 of the 3 available letters, with Cally getting the C and Staal an A. Richards I think will get the other A, but I think Girardi deserves it more.

In terms of likelihood of getting the other A, this is how I see it:
1. Richards
2. Girardi
3. Dubinsky
4. Prust
5. Gaborik

I don't really see any other roster player having any kind of chance to get it, and I think after Richards and Girardi, the chances are remote even for those who made my list.

I don't get the love for girardi over dubi for the A. All I'm gonna say is I can't ever remember seeing dubi just standing around watching while a star teamate is being assaulted by a goon.

Callahan, AINEC.

I have a feeling that Richie ends up with an A as well.
