We are expecting a Champagne season in Milwaukee!

Too bad that "Champagne" Tony Lema died so young.

As expected, news comes today that Bouillon will not be ready for training camp due to his continued battle with concussion symptoms.

Nick Spaling is 100% after recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, but Mike Fisher will be limited to start camp as he too recovers from a couple of surgeries this summer...

This is the part of the year I will miss most about the Thrashers. I live about 10 mins from their practice rink, so I made it to most of camp. Anyway, I can't wait to see who makes the team!

Only real battle I see is the 3rd pairing D and the last roster spot.

Does Halischuk make the team?

Those really are the only two questions I have. Section 303 I think nailed the roster.

I disagreed with Jeremy on a couple of fronts.

First, I don't think Geoffrion makes the team out of camp (I'd LOVE to eat that prediction). Instead, I think he starts the season in Milwaukee getting major minutes on their top line much in the same fashion Nick Spaling did last season. It's better IMO for Blake to be playing top-6 minutes and getting PP time in Milwaukee rather than playing bottom-6 minutes in Nashville to start the year.

Second, I don't think Laakso starts in the top-6 on D. I think he sticks as the No. 7 defenseman, but believe that it'll be Hillen's job to start the year.

Jeremy's prediction was: (Whole series is worth a read - http://www.section303.com)

Kostitsyn - Fisher - Hornqvist
Geoffrion - Legwand - Erat
Wilson - O'Reilly - Bergfors
Spaling - Smithson - Tootoo
Halischuk

My prediction is:

Kostitsyn - Fisher - Hornqvist
Erat - Legwand - Bergfors
Spaling - Smithson - Tootoo
Wilson - O'Reilly - Halischuk
Stortini

With games at Columbus and St. Louis to start the year, I think Stortini gets the nod as the 13th forward and could very well be in the lineup for those two contests to add a little grit. Stortini has shown the ability to take a regular shift, crash and bang, and hold his own when the mitts are dropped. I think he's been a very underrated acquisition this summer.

On defense we both were in agreement with our Top 4:

Suter - Weber
Blum - Klein

But Jeremy proposed Josi-Laakso as our third pairing, while I'm gonna give the nod to Jack Hillen over Laakso due to his experience.

Really looking forward to camp!

Solid post Slake. Just a few thoughts.

I think with a player like Bergfors who may play at 100% all the time, you need to ease him into the lineup and make him earn his icetime. Expectations are high for Wilson this year to produce and I don't think he can do that from the bottom pairing. I see Wilson in a top6 role, and Bergfors in the bottom 6 to start the season. It may play out differently, but this is how I see it kicking off.

SK - Fisher - Hornqvist
Wilson - Legwand - Erat
Halischuk - O'Reilly - Bergfors
Spaling - Smithson - Tootoo
Stortini

Stortini is a good call as the extra skater. If we have a game coming up against a more skilled team you can call up a Blake Geoffrion for example, but for day to day purposes Stortini should be there to provide some energy and toughness when eventually things get stale.

Also agree that Hillen should start over Laasko or even Ellis. The extra experience should help guide Josi into the NHL smoothly. Although any of the kids could force our hand and create a 3rd pairing of rookies, I don't see that as being beneficial to either the team or their development. A guiding hand is always helpful.

Apparently, former Notre Dame center Ben Ryan will not be ready for rookie camp due to an ankle injury, but is expected to participate in training camp. Tough break for Ryan as he fights for a roster spot in a crowded field of forwards for Milwaukee.

Numerical Roster Released for Main Camp

Preds have released a numerical roster for training camp. No new invitees listed. Defenseman Scott Valentine from the Oshawa Generals (OHL) is the sole invitee not under contract to Nashville or Milwaukee. Valentine was a draft pick of the Ducks, but became a free agent after turning down their final offer. He attended prospect camp this past summer.

There was apparently a video stream available for tonight's Florida-Tampa Bay game. So I hope there will be one tomorrow evening for Game 2 of the tournament.

Florida beat Tampa 4-2 with Jacob Markstrom playing solid in net for the full 60 minutes, John MacFarland getting a shortie, and Erik Gundbarsson leading the way defensively.

The rookie camp roster is 21 players, so I have a sneaky suspicion that they'll let all of them dress and rotate the spare defender (likely Foss or Valentine) into the pairings for the odd shift or for special teams situations.

Lines in the two days of camp were:

Gabriel Bourque - Craig Smith - Taylor Beck
Josh Shalla - Jani Lajunen - Austin Watson
Ryan Flynn - Michael Latta - Joel Champagne
Brent Andrews - Robert Slaney - David Elsner

Ryan Ellis - Charles-Oliver Roussel
Mattias Ekholm - Taylor Aronson
Victor Bartley - Jeff Foss/Scott Valentine

Chet Pickard and Atte Engren are the two goalies.

Gonna type up my observations for OtF this afternoon. Will put the link in here afterwards...

Appreciate it Slake! Let me know how Champagne does. He was in the leafs' system for a few years so I got to see him at a few training camps here. He's a natural center so should be interesting to see what he can do at wing. The Ellis/COR pairing looks interesting. Who's scott valentine? A camp invite?
