Meltzer is speculating it will be Couturier or Kessel that get that spot.

Releasing Lehtivuori puts Flyers at 49 contracts, enabling them to sign one more player (Couturier, B. Kessel) to an ELC.

I have a natural aversion to all things named Kessel.

I think it would be cool if Couturier got the last spot, but I think it might be more prudent to give him another year of development. No need to rush now.

he is a right handed shot, he does have some things to work on but I dont think it would be a bad thing to have him around. At least he can go to the AHL if he was willing to.
I wonder if JVR asked him to come to camp

Zac Rinaldo could end up being an under the radar competitor to join Philadelphia's roster following training camp.
"He is going to [have an impact] for sure," said assistant coach Craig Berube. "He really wants to play - and that's important. Everyone wants to play, but there's some guys that really push the envelope to force their way onto the roster. He could be one of those guys." His strength and fitness work over the summer was also praised by head coach Peter Laviolette after Rinaldo showed up for rookie camp last year out of shape. He could land a spot on the team as a fourth-liner at a cheap price of $544,000 and bring some physicality to the lineup. Rinaldo amassed a whopping 331 penalty minutes and nine points in 60 games with the AHL's Adirondack Phantoms last season.

His cap hit would mean at least one player would have to go. Picked at 8 he will not be cheap

excerpt from Sarah Baicker article-
Quote:
A number of players, from Hartnell to Wellwood, acknowledged the feeling of “excitement” surrounding rookie camp and the approach of training camp. The Flyers’ practice facility is a very different place now from what it was a year ago.

“I think probably you sense it more with the older guys who have been training here, as opposed to, for me anyway, the younger guys who are here now for the rookie camp,” said general manager Paul Holmgren. “But I think a lot of [the rookies] know too, from Wellwood to Rinaldo, that group that’s been here for a little bit of time.”

With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that this year’s rookie camp – now two days old – has a pace much quicker and seemingly more intense than last year’s. Accordingly, a few skaters have already made an impression on Holmgren. He mentioned Wellwood, Rinaldo and Tyler Brown by name.

He signs an Adam Larsson contract, there is no problem.

I don't quite get the love for Rinaldo either. Holmgren has this soft spot for guys who like to do stupid, reckless and dangerous things on the ice. He thinks these guys have more desire, passion and will to win. I guess that may be true but I don't understand why this "passion" has to be paired with stupidity. Guys like Downie can be useful because they have skills - but guys like Rinaldo? I don't get it.

Rinaldo is just a younger Carcillo that fights a bit better. He's going to take bad penalties and cost the team goals and maybe games. I just hope when he does get suspended that he doesn't seriously injure somebody.

And he took a huge run at Couturier this summer - afterwards Homer is saying how well he's doing. It's retarded. I would have LOVED to see somebody at least try and cave in his head.

Well something similar like that happened the first day during one of the drills. He went 1 on 1 with someone (cant remember who) and lost the puck and cheap shotted the guy from behind. Next time he went 1 on 1 with Lauridsen and Oliver payed it back by completely dominating him, somewhat illegally, along the boards.

That is one player I would like to see shine and do well. The dude completely dominates players with his 6'6 size.

I don't understand the Rinaldo hate. I think he would be perfect with Schenn and Simmonds. However, if Couturier is good enough then I agree that Rinaldo has no place.

Rinaldo is a psychotic Darroll Powe without the extreme defensive aptitude.

Basically he's a speedy bowling ball.

You want him on a scoring line with Schenn and Simmonds?

I know there are some who hate Rinaldo and some who love him. I'm actually both. I love his hitting and speed, and I hate his dirty hits and temper. Like it or not it looks like he'll be a Flyer within a few years if not this year. Between he and Sesito I think one of the two is going to bump Shelly and I'd rather have Rinaldo who can at least hit than Shelly and his cap eating salary on the 4th line. I'd rather have Sesito though than either of the other 2.

Where are all the rookie camp observations and write-ups? Always enjoy reading everyone's posts on the camps.

I haven't seen anything here but in my searching around the interwebs I have gathered the following (others opinions not mine):

Schenn and Couturier are the obvious standouts
McGinn has been very impressive (I'm not sure in which way but I've read it 3 or places now through tweets etc)
Rinaldo is ripped and faster
Lauridsen has matured a lot physically and is using his size well
Manning is recovering from surgery and isn't there
