Blake Kessel signs ELC; Adam Mair has a tryout

@NHLFlyers
Philadelphia Flyers

#Flyers have signed defenseman Blake Kessel to an entry-level contract, according to GM Paul Holmgren.

Quote:
BLAKE KESSEL laughed.

He knew the question was coming - the same question that fellow prospect Eric Wellwood answered ad nauseam about his older brother, Jets forward Kyle Wellwood, last fall when he broke into the NHL with the Flyers.

If the name sounds familiar, Blake Kessel is the younger brother of Maple Leafs All-Star Phil Kessel. But his last name isn't what is going to win him a job in pro hockey.

Kessel, 22, knows that the deck is stacked against him. He is in this week's Flyers rookie camp - and full training camp, which begins on Saturday - on a tryout contract. Most years, on most teams, that wouldn't mean much.

With the Flyers, it has an entirely different meaning.

The Flyers are at the NHL's 50 contract limit, meaning they cannot sign or add any more players to their organization without first freeing up a spot. Sources said they are expected to reduce that number to 49 later this week when former draft pick Joonas Lehtivuori, who left the Phantoms midway through last year to return to Europe, is released from his contractual obligations.

But that would only make room for one player. And veteran Michael Nylander, who racked up more than 200 career points alongside new Flyer Jaromir Jagr, is also in town on a strictly tryout basis to see if the two can rekindle their magic.

It is the same reason why No. 8 overall pick Sean Couturier, who has yet to sign a deal, remains a long shot to make the team. Couturier likely will end up back in Quebec for a fourth season of junior hockey.

And the Flyers also have a tryout offer extended to former Devils forward Adam Mair, though he has not yet responded to let the team know he will attend.

"I do feel a little pressure, but it's a good thing," Kessel said yesterday. "I think you need to put a little pressure on yourself to get the best out of yourself. Whatever happens, it will be a good experience either way just getting playing time with these guys.

"I'm going to see guys that I've always watched on TV."

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6'2'', 205-pound defenseman Blake Kessel to an entry level contract, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

Kessel (22, 4/13/89) spent last season with the University of New Hampshire of the Hockey East Conference in the NCAA where he recorded five goals and 22 assists for 27 points in 39 regular season games.

He was named Hockey East First All-Star Team and NCAA East First All-American Team in 2010-11.

He played the last three seasons at UNH, the first of which was as a teammate of Flyers left wing James van Riemsdyk.

Yes he's Phil's Brother.

http://eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=12176

Played with JVR at UNH for one season, and put up a PPG season from the blueline the year after JVR left. He then regressed last year.

He was drafted in the 6th round by NYI back in 2007 out of the USHL (same draft class as JVR).

He's a mobile, skilled defenseman. Once upon a time he was a forward. He was converted to defense. That should tell you quite a bit.

He's pretty, "meh." That 7.0 rating is a little generous.

It also means we're back at 50 contracts. (49)

Eh Islander fans seem to be split on him. Here is what one of their fans said:

Quote:
He was a conference All Star the past couple years. In terms of his potential I can't see him being more then a serviceable bottom pairing defensemen in the NHL with a long shot of being a decent second pairing guy.

I think it's one of those cases if you don't have much prospect depth it's well worth a shot but the fact he was a UFA this summer and didn't get much interest probably speaks volumes what the NHL scouts feel about him(but once in a blue moon a guy will slip through the cracks and maybe he can translate his offensive to the NHL and become a 40-50 point guy)

Don't like it. Would have rather given Couturier a chance to play >9 games with the big team, or at least wait until camp is over to sign their final roster player... But you know, Holmgren doesn't roll that way.

Meh. Not great but not bad. I figured this contract spot was going to to go Couturier or Nylander toward the end of camp depending on who was playing better (or given to no one if they didn't earn it). I guess they'll jettison another contract in the event that one of those two plays well enough during camp. I'm totally fine putting Couturier back in Juniors and waiting a year to sign him. Not really sure there is room for him (or Nylander, for that matter) on this team with the glut of centers, unless they plan on moving someone to wing (Briere? Schenn? Couturier?). Guess we'll have to wait and see how things pan out during preseason.

I found some video of Holmgren chatting with his bird after Lehtivouri failed to meet expectations:

Fast-forward to today, and it's clear that Homer has found his diamond in the rough...he will use Kessel to gain access to the greatest treasure of all: the genie's lamp, which he will use to gain unlimited cap space and at least two more Shelleys.

I suppose since he can't play in the AHL(right?), if the org isn't 100% sure he's NHL ready there's no point wasting an ELC year playing in the NHL too soon when he can develop a little more.

I don't really know anything about this guy other than who he is related to and that he's a righty. Where approx does he fit on the depth chart? After Gustafsson and before Marshall?

DEAL!

Imo, that would easily make Philly contenders again

Hartnell - Briere - Jagr
Van Riemsdyk- Giroux - Kessel
Voracek - Talbot - Simmonds
Rinaldo - Betts - Nodl

Pronger - Carle
Coburn - Timonen
Schenn - Meszaros

Gustafsson/Lilja

I'm not sure on this but - Couturier can play 8 games without an ELC and then be sent back to juniors - right?

Anyway - I firmly believe that if Couturier plays well and the GM feels he can handle a full NHL season - they will dump somebody else and fit him in. The ELC Kessel just got does not decrease his chances IMO.

Adam Mair...

http://www.csnphilly.com/blog/flyers...727&feedID=695

Quote:
Mair to try out
Adam Mair has officially accepted a tryout with the Flyers, and on Wednesday he was at Skate Zone, where he now has a locker stall set up.

Mair, 32, was a member of the New Jersey Devils last season, and, as Panotch points out, has long been known as a “glue” guy – an Ian Laperriere-type. Because of Laperriere’s absence, the Flyers continue to seek character guys to fill their room.
However, Mair is still a longshot to make the Flyers’ roster. Nevermind the lack of available contracts or cap space; Max Talbot may already occupy the role Mair would fill.
http://www.phillyburbs.com/sports/fl...4c9f2428e.html

Quote:
NHL veteran journeyman right wing Adam Mair and undrafted free agent prospect Blake Kessel were signed to contracts by the Flyers on Wednesday.

Mair, 32, was inked to a tryout contract. Kessel, the younger brother of Toronto's Phil Kessel, was given an entry level contract.

Mair, 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, has played most recently for the New Jersey Devils but has spent the majority of his career with the Buffalo Sabres. He also spent time with the Los Angeles Kings. He is a gritty player who has accrued 829 penalty minutes in 615 career NHL games. Last year for New Jersey he played in 65 games and had just one goal and three assists for four points with 45 penalty minutes.

The unrestricted free agent, a native of Hamilton, Ont., has 38 goals and 76 assists for 114 points in his NHL career. In 2008, he served as an alternate captain for Buffalo. His 2005-06 season was marred by concussions which cost him 31 games.

"My goal is to come in and challenge for a spot — and make the hockey club,'' Mair said. "That's the only reason to be here."
