2 More Training Camp Invitees?

According to Blake Price, looks like the Canucks have invited another pair of aging vets to camp...

@blakeprice1040 Blake Price
Anders Erikkson and Niko Dimitrakos coming to camp? I hope Dimitrakos makes it... I can't wait to see that t-shirt in the Canucks store.

FYI...

Niko Dimitrakos (former Flyer/Shark). Played in KHL / Swedish Elite League over the past 2 seasons.

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p....php?pid=46777

Also, former Leaf/Ranger/Wing (among others) Anders Eriksson. He played for both Timra IK and Modo of the Swedish Elite League last year, and skated in 8 games for the NY Rangers in 09/10.

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...y.php?pid=1577

Looks like Dimitrakos and Eriksson were actually teammates last season for a bit with Modo.

Not expecting much from these 2 to be honest. We'll see.

I like the enthusiasm MG, but with 1 spot left on the team and about 745 PTO's this is getting a little crazy

If true, at this rate, I think our guaranteed players may play two preseason games at the most. Wouldn't be such a bad thing after the short off season but there is also the issue of getting back up to speed and shaking the rust.

Dimitrakos last played in the NHL in '06-'07; he was -4 in 5 games, took 3 minor penalties while playing about 8 minutes a game, and had 4 shots on net.

For Modo last year he had 5 points in 22 games; to put that in perspective Byron Ritchie led the team in scoring with 44 points in 53 games. Byron Ritchie, if you remember, had 11 points in a full season for the Canucks back in '07-'08.. So Dimitrakos was significantly outscored by a player who was a failed experiment here, and has been away from the NHL game for a year longer.

I really don't understand what he could bring to this club other than another veteran for the Wolves.

No need to look further...

We also are developing a reputation for rehabilitating many NHL careers, which in the long and short run will help us with attracting the players we truly want.

Hey now, I won't stand here and let you bad-mouth our former PP quarterback.

Anyone know if Shawn Antoski or Andrei Nazaroff are looking for a tryout? May as well bring them out this week too.

I know. I can't fathom it.

Then again, Gilles has done nothing so far (bar the Grabner trade perhaps) to make me doubt his judgement.

Has it been confirmed that Winchester denied?

Some players refuse the invitation, like McCabe, Gillies offered him a tryout at camp, but he refused. He's holding out for a real contract. (source Pierre Lebrun, Team 1040).

I think it's safe to say that Winchester was extended an invite, but chose to fight for a spot in San Jose instead.

I dont know why he would be training in Vancouver with current players when he has no ties if he was not interested in playing for us.... and now hes on a tryout with SJ

Seriously ? Invites don't hurt the team in any way.

Maybe Gillis is just throwing out bones to old friends/clients and whatever.

What effect does it cause other than creating extra competition and adding some veteran guys to change the dynamic a bit?

I'm fine with Gilles inviting whoever he wants and competition is always a good thing for the bottom line, but if he's choosing to include someone like Dimitrakos instead of Winchester (which admittedly is speculation) than I would question that decision.

there is always the fact that u have to dress a certain # of NHL vets for the preseason.

I suspect there is also something that prevents the Canucks from giving 50 yr olds try outs but you know what i mean

Gillis is bringing in vets to fill out the pre-season roster.

Short off-season, lots of injuries and you need a certain amount of vets in pre-season games. It's actually pretty clever. Kesler, Raymond etc. take the pre-season off and Vigneault picks a body or two he wants for the 4th line.

I agree with most that say we're going to have a slow start to the season. I also think we get absolutely slaughtered in the pre season.

Was it Yotes fans or Rangers fans that said Eriksson was beyond horrible

But I'm sure they share a similar opinion

Think they call him Bubba too

The only reason Anders Eriksson was brought in was to make our other players look way way way better. Thus we increase their trade value. Well played Mr. Gillis.

MG has a well thought out battle plan for pretty much everything, and this seems logical.

The vet's can help with the young bucks during the preseason/exhibition games as well, and the players on pto's can very well land a job elsewhere if they preform alright, so this helps both parties when its all said and done.

Apparently he's going to attend the Islanders' camp. Obviously they would be a better fit for him if he's looking for a top four situation and bigger money.
