Fun fact:

It has been exactly 108 consecutive games since the flyers last shutout which was 5/22/10 with Micheal Leighton against Montreal in gm 2 of the ECF.

7 in '10 playoffs
8 in '10-11 preseason
82 in '10-'11 season
11 in '11 playoffs

Well, look at that. A shutout.

Did we have one of those last pre-season, or can we say that the curse is broken now?

Bobrovsky was really, really good today. Couturier got better and better but the best forwards out there were Simmonds and Read imo. Schenn didn't exactly wow me, but he was pretty good on the pk, that was nice to see. I hope that one of Bartulis or Gustafsson will grab the 6th spot, and they played pretty well tonight, I think Bartulis looks stronger this year.

Sestito might not be the smartest player out there, but if he ends up being our enforcer instead of Shelley I'll live with that simply by the saving we make towards the cap.

As for Toronto, their d had a pretty terrible game. If Luke Schenn, Komisarek and Franson plays like this in the regular season it will be a long, long season for them. If they do, Burke will also no doubt do something stupid and trade away the 1st round pick.

Betts - xxxxx - Talbot

So you only have two spots going. You have to presume Nodl is making the team after his performance last year, which could mean that there is one spot up for grabs. With the way they were talking up Read, it could be him on the third line. Sestito looks like a solid player though, and has massive size.
I'm not so sure Nodl is in the lineup on 10/6. Here's what I like - doesn't mean it's going to happen.

JVR - Giroux - Simmonds
Hartnell - Briere - Jagr
Read - Schenn - Voracek
Rinaldo - Betts - Talbot

There is some really good, young speed on this team. Testwuide could play instead of Read, Sestito instead of Rinaldo, Shelley in for Rinaldo against a team with an enforcer, Talbot instead of Betts at 4th line C and plug in Sestito on the wing.

Could Rinaldo possibly be a Powe replacement? I know he is not ready to be a PKer like Powe but he can skate and will definetly hit some.

What's it called when the other team doesn't score a goal on us?

Rinaldo is closer to a Carcillo. Holmstrom would most closely resemble Powe.

Harry Z...the Flyers generally have a thing in training camp where the lower the number you're given for camp, the higher your expectations are. Z has #29, which I find to be an indication that they expect him to be a call-up at the very least. Just a theory on that.

I'm calling it, Betts will get cut before Nodl.

As if Nodl won't make the team and have a big year on the PK

Don't get all the Nodl hate here. Is he an offensive worldburner? No. Is he a complete schlub? No.

He's got speed and very good forechecking ability, and is defensively responsible.

Absolutely flawless game. Everyone looked speedy and full of energy and I was very impressed. BOB looks ridiculous. Not only does he get the shutout on his birthday but he looks like a totally different player. He doesn't go straight to the butterfly anymore. Taking lessons from Bryz perhaps? Read looked like some kind of NHL superstar. He literally went through the entire Leafs team except for Reimer. Zol is speedy as hell no wonder Homer loves him. Voracek has sick hands. Looked like Zherdev except he actually spent some of his time in the defensive zone. Do I even need to mention Simmonds? Looked dominant throughout the game. Couturier found his way into the game as well a Schenn. Both looked good on the PK and made some good plays. Bartulis looks rejuvanated after his recoverey. Hope he grabs the 6th spot for cheap. What is there to say about Happy Gilmore...er Rinaldo? He's kept his promise and is becomig more of a hockey player instead of some kind of bat**** crazy dude. Looked filthy on that goal. Carle and Testuwide also really impressed me as did Gustaffson. Only three players pissed me off tonight:
JVR was not good. Skating like a brick and took a lot of penalties. He better improve fast.
Kessel gave away the puck way to much on no look passes. Looked better later on though I'll give him that.
M. Leighton sat on the bench but I was pissed at him because he was on the bench.

Other then that this game gets a perfect 10 from me. So excited for the season.

My thoughts...

Most Impressive:
Bobrovsky
Read
Simmonds
Voracek

Pretty Impressive:
Zolneircyk (sp?)
Rinaldo
Schenn

Couterier I just thought was ok, despite the points. JVR was kind of invisible.

Playing against the Leafs has that effect on even the softest of players

Rinaldo would play great in Lavy's system but there is no way he would want another hot head in there as soon as he got rid of Carcillo.

JVR - Giroux - Vorachek
Hartnell - Briere - Jagr
Nodl - Schenn - Simmonds
Sesito/Shelley - Betts - Talbot

sounds about right for the forwards. unless someone else plays amazing this preseason

I 100% agree. Nodl WILL be in the top 9 this season. He played well last year and improved over the previous season. I expect him to be even better this year. This is one preseason game. Don't get me wrong I saw some great things, but lets wait till pre season is over before we pick the lineups.

What I liked is the team played like a team and played the system to the T with intensity. In preseason games there is a tendency to play like Zherdev (individualistic) but it seemed everybody was on the same page and lots of players still stood out. That's encouraging for the first preseason game. Not like Lavy's system is easy to grasp although with commitment and discipline it becomes easier. Hopefully, they keep on ticking....only one game but nice game!

Even with all his ice time, it didn't feel like JVR was on the ice all that much. But he'll definitely get better as the preseason goes on.

Nodl accounted well for himself, but he actually probably declined as the season went on, and then came out like a maniac in that game vs. the Caps.

I would replace Couturier with simmonds in that list if I were choosing.

Read, Simmonds, Bobs, Testwuide, Zolnierczyk and Rinaldo were all impressive. I didn't really see JVR doing too much.

I don't hate Nodl but I have to disagree with:

speed? not really

very good forechecking? Huh??? no

defensively responsible? ok - so are a lot of faster forwards trying to make this team

hands? NONONONO. He has no vision, no hands and doesn't pass well.

I guess I do hate him after all
